Have checked 1901 Scottish census and there is a Shoveller family living in Glasgow. Head of household is a marine engineer from Hampshire, so births may belong to them.

Drat!!!

Has anyone found the birth of Frederick Shoveller, or him in any censuses?

Is this his death, or is there another likely one?

No, I've looked under all sorts of names but nothing coming up.

Death looks pretty good though!

There are Shovel(l)ers around, but not for Frederick, or Alfred even.

So I would want the marriage certificate - but it depends how close the relationship is.

I was wondering if he was not born a Shoveler, but maybe his mother married someone called Shoveler and he took his step father's name?

I think the marriage certificate is essential to solve this one!

Thank you everyone for your help....The relationship to me is not a close one so I wont be purchasing a cert...I was just curious to see who she married....
I have tried different spellings of the name but haven't really come up with much!!

Thanks again

Since Elham now falls under Kent RD, I can do an online search in their local index for the 4 names of interest at:
http://www.kent.gov.uk/KCC.ROIS.Web.Sites.Public/Pages/MarriageSearch.aspx

Kent Registration Services - Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates

Note which pairs have the same entry #.
The presence of an "RO" in the church code bit of the Register code suggests to me that this is from the registrar's own register.
This was mostly used for rego office marrs, since most non-conformists were authorized to keep official registers from 1898.
However, RCs weren't authorized until the 1980s (I think), so the registrar would still have to attend RC marrs so the couple could sign his official rego - such entries would be mixed in with the usual rego office marrs.
