thanks every one for all this help with the info, I never thought to look at the names for next door, I think your right about the surname confusion argyllgran it had me going round in circles made me think some thing had happened, I'll try and go though all this tonight

Reggie the death of William shotton gilchrist in 1980 in darlington is my granddad, his death was registered by my mother Jeanette mary Matthews nee gilchrist and the William shotton gilchrist that died in Dorset is my uncle that was registered by his daughter

my mam (Jeanette Mary Matthews nee gilchrist 1943) was talking today and is still determined she was told of a sister called either Christine or Christina gilchrist in surrey and something about a Shelia, also this story she was told about an uncle jimmy that came down from Scotland when her mother (Mary Jane gilchrist nee young 1908) died,
so hopefully I can get some where with these records and advice you've given, thank you all
