hi I am looking for help finding info on my gran's family Mary Jane young born 1908 in saint Giles Edinburgh to James young born England approx 1878 and Mary young nee Morrison born in England born approx. 1880 . I cant find where in England they were born,
they were married in march 1900 in Edinburgh Mary young's maiden name when she was married is muirhead mkensie her father was Edward mkensie and mother Susannah mkensie nee Morrison, James young's father was also James young and his mother was Jane young nee Stewart

On the 1911 census I did find 2 brothers with them both born in Edinburgh- john young born 1910 and Edward young born 1906 on there birth certificate's it says mothers maiden name is Mary muirhead mkensie. so don't know if she had a different mam but she was born in the middle of the two boys I don't know if they had any other children but she was meant to have a brother called jimmy (James) young that was in the forces, I am trying to find out what happened to Edward and john as well

Mary Jane young married William shotton gilchrist in Kensington, London in 1935
they had 2 children that we know of William shotton gilchrist born in surrey in 1936 and Jeanette Mary gilchrist born in Middlesbrough 1943, these children ended up in children's homes when she died in may 1943 there is meant to be other children, any thing any one can add to this would be really appreciated

Try FreeBMD for the children if they lived in England /Wales after they married

If the family stayed in Scotland then you need Scotlands People to look for possible marriages etc for the two brothers

Have you looked to see if anyone on here has any of these people in their trees?

patchem

patchem Report 3 Feb 2014 07:56

You have put that Mary born in 1908 had mother:

'Mary young nee Morrison born in England born approx. 1880 . I cant find where in England (they) were born,
they were married in march 1900 in Edinburgh Mary young's maiden name when she was married is muirhead mkensie her father was Edward mkensie and mother Susannah mkensie nee Morrison,'

Probably Mary born 1880 was born to Susannah Morrison before Susannah's marriage to McKensie, so that is why there is the confusion over maiden names?

Jeanette married in Darlington district

The other daughter (if indeed she was born to the same parents) married Young, and is on the ER for 2002 only - has probably since opted out of the version which is sold. However, her husband's name is listed in the current phone book at the same address

Have you found James and Mary in 1901? What was James's occupation?

Have you looked for Mary's birth?

It would be helpful if you posted the 1911 census.......................

Somebody on Ancestry has added these other names for Lucy Moorhead:

Lucy A. Moorhead
[Susannah Moorhead]
[Susannah Morrison] - maiden name
[Hannah Morrison]

And on the 1901 has added this comment:

Susannah Was crushed by the wheel of her her Cart and she died in 1903.

[EDIT: I see some of this has already been posted while I was busy typing!]

Yes, I was looking at that too, Maureen, especially as the next door neighbour is an Edward Mckenzie.

Daughter Mary's age in 1881 might be meant to be 12 months, although image clearly says 12 years.

Births Mar 1880 (>99%)
MOORHEAD Mary Carlisle 10b 463

Marriages Mar 1876 (>99%)
MOORHEAD Edward Carlisle 10b 690
MORRISON Susannah Carlisle 10b 690

By 1901, Edward Moorhead seem to have a different wife, Hannah - but Ancestry (and an Ancestry user) suggests she's the same person, and I can't see a marriage of Edward to a Hannah after 1881.

1901 England Census about Hannah Moorhead

Deaths Mar 1903 (>99%)
Moorhead Susannah 40 Carlisle 10b 366

So on the face of it, she hadn't married Edward Mckenzie by 1900.
But Edward McKenzie (per james Young's marriage cert) was a hawker, and so was Edward Moorhead.
the next door neighbour Edward McKenzie was a general labourer in 1881.

I wonder if Susannah had had a dalliance with neighbour Edward McKenzie, and on Mary's marriage cert Mary said they were married, for respectability, even though Susannah was still with Edward Moorhead???

Too many coincidences to be disregarded, I feel.

As an aside, I wonder if this person is linked to the same confused family/families:

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915 about Hannah McKinzie Moorhead
Name: Hannah McKinzie Moorhead

Edward Moorhead Was my Great Grandfather. He later moved to Hamilton in Scotland. He had Two Kids Anna & Edward wirh Annie McCallum (Who was also a Hawker). He died in Hamilton and he was buirred on Common Ground at the Bent Cemetery.

This must have been after 1911 as Edward is on the 1911 census.

There is also this one:

Name:Hannah McKenzie Moorhead
Date of Registration:Apr-May-Jun 1870
Registration District:Wigton
Inferred County:Cumberland
Volume:10b

Odd that the vol and page numbers are the samd as the 1858.

There are a few McKenzie/McKinzie Moorhead births in Cumbria for the same period.

Potty - garrymccallum added a later correction - it wasn't Edward, it was his son Joseph:

*Correction, Joseph Moorhead was My Great Grandfather who later moved to Hamilton Scotland.
