Frustratingly we have been unable to locate a death for Walter George Brain born 1873 who died between 1897 and 1901 in Bristol Gloucestershire. His widow was Fanny and he may have been known as George. He is not obvious on any local census for St George Bristol in either 1881/1891. The couple married in 1895 and we are waiting a marriage certificate to confirm his father. His son was born in 1898 but wife Fanny was a widow in 1901. Could someone be kind enough to do a probate search?

Nothing coming up Marion.

Do you know for certain that he had died, or could Fanny have been calling herself a widow on the 1901 because they had, in fact separated?

Any idea of his occupation?

Marion

Marion Report 16 Jan 2014 00:31

Not until we get the marriage certificate. She remarried shortly after 1901 and relocated to Somerset. Nothing is known of Walter George her first husband..its a complete mystery!

Was wondering about the Boer War, this name came up on Findmypast but subscription has just run out! The initial A could be Archibald the name of his first son.

Are you sure his son was born in 1898? I can't see a birth in that year for someone called Archibald Brain.

Have you looked on Freebmd for a death for Walter G Brain as there is one in Kingswood but died 1950..

Thanks Sue your research is what we already have exhausted. many times over. First son Archibold John Walter Brain was born 1896 died the same year. Second son Frederick was born 1898. As you have shown 1901 shows his mother Fanny Brain as a widow living with parents. She marries Harry Davis in 1906 in Clutton. Troby should be Treby. Have exhausted all the deaths before 1901 for Walter George Brain, so now looking at possibility that he went missing presumed dead?

MarieCeleste Report 17 Jan 2014 08:20

Marion, did the details on that 1950 death certificate positively eliminate him as being yours? (Difficult, I know).

EDIT: I see the 1950 death had wrong middle name

England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966
Name: Walter Gilbert Brain
Probate Date: 1 May 1950
Death Date: 13 Mar 1950
Death Place: Gloucestershire, England
Registry: Bristol

How did you get to Walter George's birth year of 1873?

Gee

Gee Report 17 Jan 2014 08:45

There is a Walter Brain on the 1901 census, born 1873 Bitton. With him is an Eliza Brain

I can't see a marriage for this couple and neither can I find them on the 1911 census?

It is possible that Walter and Fanny separated
