Treemadnancy Report 9 Dec 2013 11:28

Hi Guys, having difficulty with this one... My Alfred Horatio Sheaf born Portsea Hampshire England in 1855 was the son of Mary Ann Smith above and Aaron Sheaf.

I have purchased the birth of Alfred Horatio Sheaf assuming his mother would be Smith but it says his mother was Mary Ann Sheaf "formally" Goodall ??

I have since traced a marriage for Aaron Sheaf and Mary Ann Goodall in 1850.
They had their first child Emma Frances Sheaf who is listed on the 1851 census aged 7 months but they are living with grandparents John SMITH and Charlotte?

Then came George Sheaf 1853 and Alfred H Sheaf 1855 and they are listed on the 1861 census with Aaron and Mary Ann and still living with grandparents John SMITH and Charlotte..

I'm confused and I have come to the conclusion that either Mary Ann married briefly to a Goodall or she was adopted. I'm not finding her or her parents John and Charlotte in the 1841 census... Heeelp

:-S

ErikaH Report 9 Dec 2013 11:40

Should that be 'formerly'? It makes a difference.................

Where did you get the 'info' that Mary was named SMITH? Any documentary evidence?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 9 Dec 2013 11:42

SMITH could be Mary's stepfather...............

have you looked for Mary's baptism?

Treemadnancy Report 9 Dec 2013 11:45

She is on the 1851 and 1861 census with her parents John Smith and Charlotte. Her husband a fisherman Aaron is listed as "son-in-law" and her children are listed as "grandchildren" I would have expected the grandparents to be "Goodall" but they SMITH... :-S

:-(

ErikaH Report 9 Dec 2013 11:48

Just stop a moment and consider that Mary's mother was Charlotte Goodall, and that she may have married John Smith after Mary was born

Buy Mary's marriage cert.................to see whether she knew who her father was

Treemadnancy Report 9 Dec 2013 11:49

On Alfred Horatio Sheafs birth record it lists his mother Mary Ann Sheaf "formally" Goodall residing at Rudmore Place Portsea. So shes had her son while still living with parents John and Charlotte Smith..

Definitely better than me tho Reggie, and yes your quiet right, I should consider all possibilities. I did however think perhaps she had been married briefly but seemed to young, and then wondered if she was adopted... But once again, thanks

And Thanks Chris, I have a feeling this is the same Aaron who married Mary Ann Goodall...

Has come to light that Egbert Thomas Sheaf wasn't Aaron Sheafs son.. Egbert Thomas was born in Jan 1869.. Aaron Sheaf has already remarried Amelia Sage in 1867... Have the birth for Egbert Thomas who says his father was Egbert Sheaf who is listed as a seaman in the merchant service??? I cannot find Egbert Thomas (or Thomas E Sheaf) as he was sometimes known by or his mother Mary Ann Sheaf formally Goodall born 1831 on the 1871 census. I see them on the 1881 census with his mother and siblings George, Charlotte etc. But where are they in 1871 where Egbert would have been about 3... :-(
