I have a marriage in 1904 of John Kerr Torkington to either Polly Hudson or Emily Guyatt, but on the 1911 Census the wife is named as Dora, would this be another name for either Polly or Emily as I know my nan was called Mary but her siblings called her Polly |

On 1911 census how long have the couple been married? |

|
Moira | Report | 29 Nov 2013 20:41 |
8 years married on the 1911 census, so that would be correct |

According to the Electoral Role, his wife was Emily. |

Just wondering if he married either Polly or Emily, but left which ever one it was, and was just living with Dora by 1911 census? |

You can trace John through the Electoral roles from 1903 right up to WW2. |

Just posting the 1911 so Dora's birthplace can be checked against Emily's |

This looks like Emily in 1901 - same birthplace as "Dora" |

Hello MC I have checked that we have the correct Emily but now I have looked up the 2 births that Andrew found for John Torkington first born 1911 ( not on 1911 census) and then the second one born 1915 also in 1915 there is a death for a John Torkington but it looks like the one born 1915, I cannot find a death for the first one but why would they call the second one John also if the first one was still living? |

Perhaps Dora was a pet name for Emily. My daughter in law's name is Denise but my son calls her Doris all the time. |
