In the 1941 census my gt gt grandfather Peter Rice B1836, was in the Medway union Workshop, Rochester ( St Nicholas ) at the age of 4. Would the workshop records have the names of his mother & father and how can I find those records. Thanks Warren Rice |

Workhouse records aren't my area (someone will be along who knows more) but thought I'd post this in case it turns out to be useful: |

As his dad died when he was young he may guessed at a name for his marriage so as not to appear illegitimate , |

Yes Shirley you may be right. It is a bit puzzling that Peter put his fathers name down as James Rice on both marrage cert with different Occupations. Its as if his father was still alive at that time. One off his fathers Occupation was a Caplain what is that ? Mary Ann Rice ( Peter James Rice,s mother? ) did have a illegitimate son which she called John Alfred Rice that was about 18 months after her husband Francis died in 1840. |

Douglas, might James' occupation on the marriage certificate be "captain" - that would fit in with being a waterman? |
