Have found a long article into the inquest of the death of Francis Rice - too long to type in full but will do a synopsis and send the actual article to Douglas.

Headline: Rochester and Chatham.
Publication:West Kent Guardian
Publication date:Saturday 16 May 1840

The inquest was held into the death of Francis Rice who died following pains in his chest. His death was found to be a "Visitation from God".

He had pains for a couple of days and had seen the doctor twice for medicine. Came home from work on the Friday and expired after making strange noises. His wife Mary Ann ran for the doctor.

He was the captain of the Medway steamer and had been an exemplary character and well regarded. He had turned 41 the previous September and left behind 7 children unprovided for.

The wife was reprimanded by the coroner at the request of the jury owing to her previous conduct towards her husband and family, apparently she was "of intemperate habits".

Douglas, might James' occupation on the marriage certificate be "captain" - that would fit in with being a waterman?

Quite possible he assumed his middle name was that of his father.

As regards giving occupations for his father - it all depends how the registrar asked the question and whether there was scope to mention if the parent was living or deceased. If Peter was just asked "Father's name and occupation" then he merely stated the facts as he knew them.

Yes Shirley you may be right. It is a bit puzzling that Peter put his fathers name down as James Rice on both marrage cert with different Occupations. Its as if his father was still alive at that time. One off his fathers Occupation was a Caplain what is that ? Mary Ann Rice ( Peter James Rice,s mother? ) did have a illegitimate son which she called John Alfred Rice that was about 18 months after her husband Francis died in 1840.

As his dad died when he was young he may guessed at a name for his marriage so as not to appear illegitimate ,

His baptism shows his parents names
