Thanks everyone - was just putting the children to bed. Overwhelmed at all this info flowing so thick and fast - I think you got to the bottom of it then. It seems that despite being named on my great-grandmother's birth certificate, William Haddon Arthur was already dead four years before.

So really it is his wife, my great grandmother Henrietta, who was the chancer - naming a long dead husband as father of her child. I am impressed that it's taken 126 years, almost to the day, for the little secret of her daughter's parentage to be outed!

I certainly have plenty of leads to follow now, even if the discovery has put paid to any thought of Scottish ancestry.

Henrietta lived to be 94, was bombed out of her Coventry almshouse in age 90 in 1940 and died towards the end of the war. My dear grandpa, who only died 10 years ago, was very fond of his granny (and very proud of his Scottish roots - just as well he didn't live to hear tonight's revelation!).
