Since you were all so brilliant at my last enquiry here is another puzzle for you.

My Gt Grandmother married name Louie Leighton b approx 1864
Recorded as
Louie Dorrington on her marriage certificate and her childrens birth certificates yet she is evident in 1881 census with David and Lydia Dorrington as Jane Kingley 18 yrs old as a 'visitor'
this is backed up by the 1901 census when her father appears as living with the family as 'father in law' - his name William Kingsley
I cant find find any trace of either prior to 1881
I did find a girl birth in 1863 illegitimate Jane Dorrington born to Mary Ann Dorrington
my hypothesis is Jane discovered her dads name later in life- Her mum died and she went to live with aunt or cousin???
what do you think?

had her mum died by then?

I think the name on the 1881 IS Jane, the J is the same as elsewhere on the page (see the John and James) but the descender on the "y" in Lydia is in front of it.

Was this from an actual birth cert?

So we're thinking that Jane and Loui** are the same person????

For what it's worth, I think Jane/Louie Dorrington was Mary Ann's illegitimate daughter, and lived with grandparents. The 1891 census has William & Mary Ann Kingaby still together, but I think this is her death:

The occupation and place of birth are consistent throughout the census. So if Louie knew her mother was Mary Ann, then it should be safe to assume she would consider William her "father".

Further evidence to suggest Jane/Louie was Lydia/David's grandchild, not daughter. Lydia made it through to the 1911 census, on the image she has written 7 children born, 2 have died. Looking at the 1851/61 census she has the following:

George/Mary/Lydia/Sarah/John/David/Charlotte = 7 children

Difficult to prove that Jane morphed into Louie but I do think they are the same woman.

I think William Kingaby (King(s)ley) is her birth father and that's why she was recorded by her grandparents as Kingley on the 1881.
