I'm looking for Harry Jolly in the 1901 and 1891 censuses. He was born in Bungay, Suffolk in 1888 but I don't know his parents' names. He married Alice Flatt in 1907 and I've found them in 1911 with their two children, Morris Harry and Stanley Thomas. He died in 1940. I know the marriage cert would give his parents' names but I should still be able to find him on those censuses. He'd only have been three in 1891. I've probably missed something obvious but can someone take a look, please? I've tried the search trees but the person looking for him doesn't have this information either. I've also searched public member trees and he is on one of them but with less information than I have.

Was his birth registered as Harry?

Was he 'Jolly' at birth?

It would help if you'd post the 1911 for us to see.................

I only see one child on the 1911 census, Morris Harry, aged 9 months.

There is this birth of a Stanley Thomas in 1908 but I don't think he's yours. The 1911 census states that they've only had one child.

No birth for a Harry Jolly in the right place. I wonder if his mother married later.

Yes to both, Reggie. He was my cousin's grandfather and she's been assured that that was the case.

The second child was born in 1912. It was Alice who was born in Corby, not the son. He was born in Aldershot. The image is a bit confusing.

The image is a bit strange. It looks as though someone has written it and then gone over the writing. It actually says Harry Henry with Henry crossed out. That's her death, Shirley. I've looked up probate records to see if that can help at all but no luck.

Annie

That's Harry's death too. I saw that after I'd posted.

'Assurances' without documentary proof are worthless..............

Have you looked yourself for birth info?

Kuros

Kuros Report 14 Oct 2013 17:14

The information came from certificates which have now, sadly, gone missing - presumably destroyed. The people who could supply information have also gone. Another case of we should have asked more questions while they were still here.

Thanks for your help, everyone.

Annie

Sorry, Reggie, didn't notice the second question. I can't find a birth and I've looked at Harry and Henry just in case.

Annie,

You can buy the marriage certificate from the general registrar.

Kuros

Kuros Report 14 Oct 2013 17:34

Yes, I think we need to do that. At least we'd have his father's name then.
