Find Ancestors

Was wondering if anyone can help. The above married Ellen, unknown, circa 1876/7. According to 1901 census, Ellen was born in Waterford, Ireland.
They may not have married in Ireland, but can find no marriage.

Yes, see that on 1891, 1901 and it does say Waterford, Herts. But one i have seen says Waterford, Ireland.

Maybe that should read Watford, which is fairly nearby in herts. I will put this on hold and have a look myself first.,

Original 1901 just says Waterford no mention of Herts

1881 has Thomas born Waterford and Ellen Herts ( maybe got them the wrong way round)

Birth cert would give you mother's maiden name

My g-g-grandfather was born in Watford but his convict papers stated place of birth Waterford. It caused a LOT of confusion.

I have been looking also, and i have just seen the 1881 census. where Thomas has been listed as living in Waterford Ireland. Think this must be wrong and transcriber has got it incorrect.

As there is no sign of a marriage of Thomas to Ellen, even earlier dates, in hertfordshire, maybe Ellen is from Waterford Ireland.

The whole thing looks a bit messy to me.

Will leave open in case anyone has a brain wave, but not optimistic. :-)

Was wondering if i could have another look into this one.

I have done bit of research and there is a place Waterford, in Hertfordshire. It was formerly part of the Parish of Bengeo, but was formed on its own in 1908.

Seems the translator, thought they would add Ireland to Waterford. The enumerator just entered Waterford. and census' after that state Waterford Herts, which i have now established is the correct one.

Ellen, born c1847 in Waterford, Hertfordshire, which came under Parish of Bengeo.
Married Thomas Martin c 1876/7 as first child Florence was born 1878 in Bengeo.
Looking for their marriage to find out Ellens maiden name.

Perhaps they never actually married. Ellen would have been 27/28 when Florence was born and may have been married before she met Thomas.

As Mike has said, you may have to buy the birth certificate of one of the children to find Ellen's maiden surname.

Now, I wonder if Thomas sometimes used his middle name?
