My Great-Grandfather, Charles Hector Ling, served in the Great War and lived to tell the tale though suffered shell-shock for the rest of his life, according to my father father who got the tale from 'Little Grand-dad', Charles's son. However, there is no trace of any Charles Ling in the Military Records of Genes Reunited. Is there another way of figuring out where he served or what rank he became and so on?

I have his year of birth as 1889, give or take a year. He was 22 as of the 1911 census but I don't know if that was before or after his birthday for that year so I have always put a one-year leeway on 1889.

Also, is there a reason some birth records may not be on this site? Charles Hector Ling (born in Surrey according to his own writing in the 1911 census) seems not to be in the birth records either.

I know he married in 1912, Bethnal Green, his occupation in 1911 was 'clerk' but that may well have changed...the dates and lace fit.

GlitterBaby - That's exactly what I have, he married a year later. I suspect thats how he met Annie, boarding at her fathers house.

Why do you think he was born in Surrey ?

Can not view GR images. That link only goes as far as needing credits to view

Emma

Because it's quarter past one in the morning. A typo, sorry for the confusion. The image is a copy of the census, identical to what GB put but without the last three names. It has Arthur, Mary, Florence, Annie and Charles.

You are lucky if you find any records as 70% of WW1 records were lost during WW2

Emma

Emma Report 10 Apr 2013 01:29

I'm sure Mike*. There are several bits of evidence.

1 - He lived with Annie in Bethnal Green, where the marriage was registerd

2 - They had a son together, Charles Arthur Ling, in 1919. His mothers maiden name is listed as Crook

Emma Report 10 Apr 2013 01:31

Rose - It does look like Eye on the census. I'm not used to the hanwritting but there is definatly only 3 letters
