According to the 1911 he and Harriet had been married 44 years and had had 8 children of which 1 died

Without getting certificates (which you need to do) then I would say that these are more likely to be his Pashby's grandparents in 1841 (NOT William and Hannah) - although only working on instinct here:-

Looks like Jane Scrivener and John Whiting were agricultural labourers for the same farmer in 1841:-

Buy the marriage cert and see if any father is named and if witnesses are related

Perhaps he only found out that he was born out of wedlock at a later date and so decided to use his "birth" name of Scrivener when he married but had been happy to use his father's name before that. It seems John Whiting must have gone to register the birth with Jane or the birth wouldn't be recorded in both the mother and the father's name.

It seems from the baptism record that his mother was still single when she had him baptised.
