My wife and I are researching the above character who was born in the Reighton area of Yorkshire. We have traced him on the 1881 and subsequent censuses. We have found his probable grandparents and great grandparents but are stuck with his parents. There were a William and Hannah Scrivener living in the correct area in 1841 and Hannah may have died in 1843 six months or so after Pashby's birth. However Pashby (his christian name appears to be his grandmother's surname) does not appear on a census until he is a grown man. |

Well done GB - so looks like his birth was registered in both surnames - well same page number for both. |

Perhaps he only found out that he was born out of wedlock at a later date and so decided to use his "birth" name of Scrivener when he married but had been happy to use his father's name before that. It seems John Whiting must have gone to register the birth with Jane or the birth wouldn't be recorded in both the mother and the father's name. |

Buy the marriage cert and see if any father is named and if witnesses are related |

Looks like Jane Scrivener and John Whiting were agricultural labourers for the same farmer in 1841:- |

A bit concerned about this statement "probable grandparents and great grandparents" as without knowing the correct parents how could you have arrived at that |

Without getting certificates (which you need to do) then I would say that these are more likely to be his Pashby's grandparents in 1841 (NOT William and Hannah) - although only working on instinct here:- |
