I'm puzzled why it was said "Their father, it was thought for a long time had died, but he actually remarried." - The children must have been aware of the remarriage as Gladys was with him and his new wife in 1911? Or had the family drifted apart?

I think Alexander's wife died, he was put as single on the 1901 rather than widower
? a mistake and his daughter Gladys went to live with her aunt's family as she was such a young age. When older and Father married she was able to return to him.

Doesn't help with what happened next though!

To all respondants - many thanks for your assistance. I am coming back to family history after a 2 year break - didn't mean for it to be that long, but my, doesn't time fly.

Shirley,

You have correctly identified the Hardebeck family (really there is only the one I think) with Carls second marriage to Amelia (sorry, I called her Matilda in my prior post). Thanks for advising that Gladys was with her family in the 1911 census.

As for the sailing, how can you be sure that this person isn't the one i'm after? The fact that she travelled with a 2 year old daughter (I only had this as a daughter under age 7), is not beyond the realms of possibility, given that family lore says she was an 'actress'.

Grey Ghost,

Correct. Alexander Tony Dyson did marry Ada Kendall Smith. She had a son from her previous marriage. As noted above, I made an error with the girl that married into the Hardebeck family. It was of course Amelia, aka Nellie.

Marie Celeste,

If memory serves me, Lucy (the first wife of Alexander Tony Dyson) had died either in childbirth or shortly after. Not sure as I can't find the records - yet.

Mike,

Bang on. Correct.
