Sarah

Can you look at the service records and see what the address was for the NOK, plus the date of enlistment, and his age, which should be pretty exact ( they usually say **years and **days)

Also, if you could decipher even some of the NOK's surname, it might be helpful

Hi Jacqueline,

No I do not think that Charles Wilson (parents Charles and Esther) is the right one and I shall break the news to my dad's cousin gently re that one - not sure how long he has thought that he had the right person bearing in mind he is 79 it could have been sometime! I will have to ask him whether he put that together himself or whether someone else was helping him and said they were Sarah Jane's "in-laws".

So, I know it is back to square one.

Witnesses on the marriage certificate are:

Joseph Pettifer
Emily Jane Wilson

The daughter was born 1917.

I have a few things I can use to look at.

I hope you are not still thinking that the man on the censuses is relevant. He died in WW1

You can't hope to find living relatives until you find out the facts about the man's birth and parentage. When you find out where he was born, you can look again in search all trees

The 'deceased' father named on the marriage cert may have been invented.

Any of these could be the man who married Sarah

Births Dec 1892 (>99%)
Wilson Charles William H Camberwell 1d 775

Births Mar 1893 (>99%)
Wilson Charles William Hunslet 9b 249
Wilson Charles William Stockport 8a 53

Births Dec 1893 (>99%)
Wilson Charles William Wortley 9c 332 (if registered late)

What was the first name of the Wilson witness?

When was the Wilson/Smith daughter born?

Hi Jacqueline,

Just a quickie as have to run out again.

Reginald Nears is Sarah Jane Price's 3rd husband. She married:

George Smith
Charles William Wilson
Reginald Nears

Re Reg Nears they lived in Suffolk got married in Wales (where Sarah Jane came from) moved back to Suffolk but when she died her body was taken back home to be buried with her family in Wales. Reg Nears was 20 or 25 years younger than Sarah Jane I don't have the paperwork to hand so that is from memory - I was very surprised at this but have it all confirmed.

The man who married Sarah Jane in 1917 was Charles William Wilson the certificate says age 24 making year of birth 1893 which is 1 year off the year of birth I have for Charles- I always allow leeway of at least 1 year as they weren't always certain of their own date of birth.

As for witnesses on Charles and SJ's marriage certificate, one name means nothing the other may be Charles sister or sister-in-law - yet to look into that.

The military records exist, the address is always Roxton Farm, the only name for next of kin is Lucy but the surname is difficult to read certainly not Wilson.

Thank you for your help anyway - I'll tell the person I am trying to help there has been no luck with any living relatives at the moment but it is rather soon to expect there to be.

:-)

I wonder if his service records have survived...........I don't subscribe to Ancestry, so I can't look for them for you

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 24 Jan 2015 12:12

Do the names of the witnesses hold any clues?

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 24 Jan 2015 12:10

Aged 24 in 1917, the man who married Sarah was born before 1894

His location at the time does not have any bearing on where he was born

The census above is NOT him

Hi Jacqueline,

Ooops looking at all the smiley faces on my last post - didn't see it come up when I clicked on the icon so tapped it !! Sorry.

Anyway here goes with what I know:

Marriage:
26 Sept 1917 Charles William Wilson age 24 married Sarah Jane Smith age 28.

Charles is a soldier living at Roxton Farm, Immingham. His father Charles is deceased.

Sarah Jane says she is a spinster but she married George Smith in 1911 and had a daughter with him (b 1912) but no record of a divorce and George died 1923. So bigamy has always been accepted.

On the birth certificate of Charles and Sarah's daughter the mother is named as "Sarah Jane Wilson formerly Smith". Daughter born Roxton Farm, Immingham
Charles' occupation is Driver 104th Brigade RTA 801199.

I too have found the death of Charles Wilson on the memorial but due to the year of death being 1916 and my CW and SJ marrying in 1917 discounted it.

Curiously, when Sarah Jane married her last husband, Reg Nears, on their marriage certificate she calls herself Sarah Jane Smith and not Wilson!

Hence hoping that there would be a living relative for my Sarah Jane's hubby Charles.

Sarah :-)

(this time the icon showed so hopefully one smiley face LOL)

I'm guessing you don't have the 1917 marriage cert, so don't know how old Charles was, what his second name was, and his father's details

Forgive me if my assumption is incorrect

Hi,

Thank you for replying.

Anne, thank you for putting up the extracts from the 1901 and 1911 census' which I already have.

Yvonne,
Sorry, "Price" is Sarah Jane's maiden name and I was obviously in auto pilot and used that. Her first husband was George Smith, then she married Charles Wilson and last husband Reg Nears - all of whom are dead. She had no children with Reg. She was a popular lady :-)

Don't know if it will help but I know he lived at Roxton Farm, Immingham for some time.

As for his death that is more tricky simply because I don't know where he might have moved too, if he did move. I have found 2 Charles' of the same age, from the same area and who died roughly the same time I have not ordered any death certificate as I have no idea who the informant might has been as he and Sarah Jane had long since parted.

Yes I have contacted a couple of people here but with no luck and, yes, he is on my tree.

Sarah

Where did you get the surname Price, please?

What was the daughter's name? When was she born?

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 24 Jan 2015 10:52

Sarah

You say they 'split up'

Does that mean that they divorced, as, if they didn't, Charles could not legally re-marry

Wilson Charles William Boston 7a 426

Have you identified his probable death?

Have you contacted anyone who has him in their tree, and is he in your tree on here?
