If GC is having so many problems with heavy usage would it not be better to disable things like Guest book,Success Board, Members board. Although i find tips board informative these surely slow down the rest of the site. George

Jen Report 13 Aug 2003 20:18

i dont think thats a good idea most of the members get a lot of help with there research off these boards sorry i disagree with you must be other ways with out taking things away from the site these things are what makes the site such a success

George Also, from the replies we have had from GC,its name search and or Gedcoms that are the problem. The Tips and Guest sites are extremely useful. If they went, l think there would be alot more unhappy people, including me!!!! Jude(s.wales)

George Report 13 Aug 2003 20:48

I wasn't particularly meaning the tips board. From what i have seen on the guest book and members board it is little more than a chat page. One has over 400 replies with nothing to do with family history which is what this site is all about. MSN have a good chat page if thats all you want. George

George No its not all l want, l do alot of searching on here and other sites. The Guest brd has become away of expressing ourselves in all subjects, but mostly genealogy.I'm sure if GC did'nt approve they would remove it!!!!!As you must realise searching for rellies on census sites gets very frustrating and these brds help some of us to relax!! George Report 13 Aug 2003 21:21

I am not getting at people on this site, i am just looking at ways of alleviating the problem, its nothing personal. I enjoy helping people on the tips board. Where does it say that it is the search and gedcoms that are slowing/overheating the site. Surely they are the whole point of GC.I for one would be sorry if GC failed as i have found so many definate links and have loads of new contacts George

it may be silly chit chat to some but to others it is a breath of fresh air - a way to keep in touch with new found friends who are as dear as family. they are there to dry your tears and to celebrate when there are successes. they dont judge and rally round each other - cut one and we all bleed! :))

Gearge Look at the second explanation given by the admin team on Tracy's remark about leaving (goodbye one and all)and you will see that it the search facility (i.e. lots of people searching at the same time) that causes the problems and they're trying to sort it. Nothin to do with the members board which seems to cause all those who do not bother to come and meet other like minded members a lot of problems. Could it be envy because they don't feel they can join in. Everyone is always made welcome on the members board and a lot of Family history problems are sorted out on there. do join us. ann Glos

I dont know quite where you are coming from .The other boards are a great help to a lot of members and should stay right where they are!!!!!

While you are typing out your long poems, limericks, knock knocks and other inane crap you are tying up the systen because GC is still open in the background. Thanks Margaret for your agreement. Notice it is the women that are typing the crap that are complaining. And members board is that what you call an argument. George

tracy dont worry did you not see the second message off genes admin

AnninGlos Report 13 Aug 2003 22:09

Gearge, there are a lot of male contributors to the message board, it is not just a female thing. And there are a lot of people male and female who would be upset by your use of unpleasant language. Maybe you should grow up and learn to be tolerant of other peoples' interests, instead of putting your interests fist. Ann Glos

George, I see you don't like our boards. I like GC because there is a friendliness and camaraderie amongst many of the members. It is not just a dry-as-dust reference site, but a vibrant research tool, and many of the members will bend over backwards to help. This wouldn't happen if we didn't have the boards, Jim, Gosport

George How sad that you have to resort not once, but twice, to the use of the word 'cr.p' in your argument. It completely lowers the tone set by members in general, does nothing to endear you to others, and is totally unnecessary. In your obvious fury, you must have seen only what you wished to see, and did not notice that Colin, Malcolm, Peter, William, Richard, Bill, Bert and Jim (to name but a few) all contribute to the Members Board and complain in equal measure at the slowness of the GC site. Whilst you may feel the Members Board will never be of interest to you, I think you will find that most people who have posted a query there have received an almost immediate response and have been helped on their genealogical way. Any newcomer to genealogy or to the GC site is welcomed by whoever happens to be on the Members Board at the time. Frequently those who 'pop' in will return to say thank you, and often stay for a chat. The age range of those who speak on the board is from late teens to mid-70s. All the Members welcome the opportunity to pass on any information they have gleaned in their searches which they consider may be useful to others. Some have been researching for many years; others are quite new, but still have acquired a wealth of genealogical knowledge. All UK countries and numerous counties are represented on the board which means that a great deal of local knowledge can be passed on. Other members are from Canada, USA, Austria, NZ and Australia. Several are close to PROs and are quite happy to do searches for people with a genuine request. Nothing is achieved by an aggressive attitude and my only wish for you is that you never reach a brick wall when searching for your ancestors. Many of us enjoy helping others with their research and are always exceedingly grateful if someone can also help us. Short and sweet should be the maxim here, but I'm afraid all the above had to be said. Sue

George Having just been to the Members Board I see you have left a message and an apology. Thank you! I trust you will equally take my previous message here in the appropriate way, and maybe we'll get a chance to speak to you on the MB at some stage. Sue

Well said Sue, I haven't been able to go online all night, waiting for a phone call that never came, and have just found this thread. I couldn't have put it any better myself! Maggy, West Yorkshire
