I have only managed so far to trace it back to 1860 in Stalybridge. will let you know more when I know more. I visited a site about pollitt's and there is information on variations and origins of the name type in Pollitt in your search engine and you should get it. Good luck

My wife has a fridge magnet "never trust a skinny cook" That aside, Paula, where does Pollitt come from ? I am researching Pollett in Somerset & Gloustershire and it may be a variation.

.....and then there's that cross stitch pattern, which I might stitch if ever the computer breaks down, that says: Life is too short for housework!! Even if I live to be 100, Life IS too short for housework!!!!!

Catharine Report 30 Jan 2004 08:52

To get back to the subject of plaques I have a hand-made one hanging in our kitchen which says " a tidy house is the sign of a wasted life" and which causes much amusement here in Italy where housewives won't open the door to you if their houses aren't ultra clean and tidy. Catharine in Rome

Welcome Paula! As to the housework thing, tonight when I heard the key turn in the front door lock I RAN from my office to the kitchen just so I wouldn't be seen at the computer yet again!! lol

I also have a fridge magnet that says 'my udder house is cleaner'. And one that says 'you can touch the dust but please don't write in it'. Someone once said (was it Quentin Crisp?) that after a month the dust doesn't get any thicker. I remember reading that many years ago and it has been my philosophy ever since. I think as long as your loo's clean and your kitchen tidy(ish) the rest of the house can look 'lived in'. Well that's my excuse! LOL Sue

I love this thread.... It confirms everything I always suspected about houswork (and the people who do it). The crucial question for the ladies is... Have your partners actualy noticed? Bob

I do the Washing Machine thing, then forget I have done the washing and don't hang it out. Hang on a minute, I've just remembered I have a load to hang out now, Sorry. Sylvia

How right you are Brian, it has taken me 70 years to realise that there are other things in life other than a neat and tidy house. I have two pairs of boots and a pair of shoes at the bottom of the stairs waiting to be taken up(they have been there for about a month now) but a pair of the boots will be handy to step out into the snow - saves me going upstairs for them. Yeah!!! Norah in Hampshire (with a light covering of snow, but thunder and lightning two or three hours ago!!!)

Just read through this thread and have come to the conclusion that life is a mystical time in our existence where we flit from one phase to another (takes on average 70 years) before we get on to the next adventure. Take your time ladies, sod the ironing and washing and cooking and decorating...just get on with enjoying yourselves...like we men do!!! LOL
