when my nephew was born 20 years ago (he is mixed race)he had one just above his bottom and the health vistor thouht my sister had beaten him as she had never sen them before as it looks like a bruise, but they do fade away. My 2 children had them as well but nothing was ever said to me.

my grandaughtrer was born with a pale one . her father was adopted so no family background but he looked like peter andre . she is now 14 and looks very middle eastern (beautiful) nurses said it was usual in people with darker pigmentation if thats any help

My 2 grand daughters have them on their rear ends in exactly the same place. The doctors here say they are common when one parent is of Spanish decent. But theyld never explain why. Any clues?

it was interesting to find out who had heard of them tho....i never knew about them and was quite worried when i saw my daughters. i was convinced someone would think i had hurt her in some way. the midwives made sure it was written in all of her medical note so there would never be any confusion over what it was.....thank goodness

dont panic all.....i was just curious to find out who knew what it was. my daughter, who is 2, was born with a stange bruise like mark at the base of her spine, after a lot of puzzeled looks from the midwife she asked my husband or i if we had any mediteranian conections in aur family. I was amazed that at a time like that i was going to meet another person questing for knowledge of her anscestors, but i was wrong. this mark usually appears on children of mixed race, mediteranian or arro carribean originsand she was curious to find out where it had come from. i have never met anyone with one or heard of a white child without any mixed blood ever having one....im sure you will all put me right though! christine

Hi Christine, spotted your thread earlier but didn't reply as I don't have one - but I know someone who has. They are blueish marks on the skin, that look a bit like fading bruises, usually in people who have a partial Asian background. They are also something that you have to look out for if you ever suspect a child has been bruised, too, because it could be this! Margaret says they can fade so I shall tell my friend this!

My son was born with Mongolian Blue spots on his back. They did eventually disappear. Regards Margaret

i have also got a birth mark it was malignant and as i grew IT grew !!! by the time i was 2years old it covered the whole of my thigh they couldnt remove it until i was 2 because it involved skin grafts and plastic surgery:( i ended up having 10 operations and i am left with a beautiful mark on my thigh and 2 matching ones on both cheeks!!! lol and thats not the cheeks on my face lol susie

I have a red (European) birthmark down the back of my neck and I always think hairdressers must think, ooh, I wonder if she knows about that? I do, because my Dad had one just the same so I'm very pleased to have it. Proves they must be genetic and not random.

They appear commonly at the base of the spine, on the buttocks and back, and also can appear as high as the shoulders and elsewhere. Mongolian spots are benignskin markings and are not associated with any conditions or illnesses. Occasionally, Mongolian blue spots are mistaken for bruises and questions about child abuse arise. It is important to recognize that Mongolian blue spots are birthmarks, NOT bruises.

I think the mongolian blue spot sounds like a chinese resturant or take away place lol. Would love to kno what it really is.

I thought that a Mongolian Blue Spot was a darkened area of skin usually found on Asian / Indian races. But have to admit, it does sound like a good breed for a cat or dog - far more sensible than some of those that were on Crufts at the weekend. Jacky:-)
