When architects create a site they put in paths where they want people to walk but the people make their own paths and if that happens to be across the nice green bit, that is where the path will be. There won't be lots of new paths created, just paths that the majority feel should be there. Put as many 'Don't walk on the grass' notices as they like, popular preferences will prevail. Most people stick to the rules of the Tips and other boards but the General board finds its own profile through its users so it will be whatever they want it to be - discussion with a genealogy or general bias. Family History is all about people and their lives, anyway isn't it? And yes, those who don't like it, you don't have to read it. I suppose if people want to express themselves in a rude way, that is up to them too. After all, there are enough of us who will jump in with soothing cream or bombast and bluster so it all seems pretty balanced to me. Long live generality and variety in everything but please, don't take it all so seriously!!

I havent been on the boards for a few days. Ive missed looking and helping if I can. I feel the people Ive read about and have "talked" through this are my friends. The board does say what it is for and I think clearly written. Havent read any further back as yet but please dont be put off, you will find many lovely people on here with help in all sorts of things. I really dont think I am a "sado" Its nice to talk to people who have the same interests. If there is a thread you are not interested in then you dont look at it. SO petty when there are more things to worry about! Thats SAD to me. Good luck with your hunting and making Friends. Best wishes, Jo

Well, I only just read all this thread and I haven't even seen the original one but I have to agree with the majority of sentiments. Almost any site you look at, regardless of the subject matter it is aimed at dealing with, will provide a GENERAL topics board so that the people using the site can share friendship and chit chat. I really don't see why anyone would have a problem with that concept... its such a simple one that even those with rather small brains should be able to comprehend it!! You just carry right on Sue and pay no attention to the dafties that hang around the fringes moaning. I tend to find that those who complain are the ones that don't bother to get involved or get to know people. If they did they'd soon become one of those "same old names" themselves and then I'm sure they'd feel very differently. I'm already astounded by the amount of kind help I've received on this site and its great to have the chance to get to know some of them from their threads on here rather than have them just being names on a board. As a very senior citizen, I would like to pass on to Patricia and Garry a few words of advice given to me by my mother when I was growing up. 'Always think before you speak and if you can't say something nice don't say anything at all' Worth concidering I think. Pat in Australia.

Until now I have kept out of this thread, but Gary, who made you top man, to call people who use the General Topics board, sados. Why, because a lot of us have things and opinions in common, a lot of us enjoy sharing good news, share bad or sad news, because we know we will receive sympathy and empathy. Some people on here live alone or are housebound and like to think of this part of the site as their social club, we don't all go out and have a few beers. If people are annoyed at the way the General Topics board is being used why don't they ask GC to give them their own board, and leave us sados alone to do what we want. If I don't like a thread I don't get involved in it, I certainly wouldn't get involved in that thread just to upset, annoy or deride other people. For Heaven's sake, there's enough fighting going on in the world, lets keep this site free from all of that. M.

Gary, Not sure what your browser says, but mine says the following: "This board is for general discussion on genealogy as well as every day topics." If you read the last 3 words of this description you will see people are using this board EXACTLY the way it was intended. Crista

Len of the Chilterns

Len of the Chilterns Report 4 Apr 2004 21:50

Sue As it's name implies, this board is for "General Topics". How can a title so specific mean anything else? There will always be pin-heads out there, with chronic feelings of inadequacy, who will try to put down others in order to give a boost to their own little egos. Take no notice. They feed on attention and the best way to deal with the dim-wits is to utterly ignore them. Let them crawl back under their stones. Len

General Topics, surely that means "General" which could encompass all sorts. That's what makes it enjoyable & I for one enjoy reading the threads and having the freedom to join in the ones that I want to. Long may it continue!! Lynda
