What is your Phobia? I'm petrified of butterflies & moths. if there is one in a room I have to be really sure its gone before I'm settled. Have no idea why. I'm 34 now and have always been frightened of the little bleeders, makes summer a soddin nightmare!

Darren, Mine is balloons, fireworks, party poppers, champagne corks, cap guns or anything else that goes bang. I am terrified of anything that makes a loud noise. I detest November 5th and large gatherings. Viv.

Maz (the Royal One) in the East End 9256 Report 18 Apr 2004 09:57

Very boring I'm afraid - spiders and crane flies (daddy long legs). Hubby once thought I was being murdered when he came home - I was screaming "die you ba***rd" at the top of my voice while spraying a HUGE spider with wasp killer - tears pouring down my face in the meantime!! I had thought it was dead and gone to pick it up on newspaper - THEN IT RAN !!!! aarrgghh!! Funnily enough I am fine with moths and butterflies - can even pick them up and transport them to safety if necessary! Am also terrified of heights. Very bravely took daughter up 530 steps to top of St Paul's 2 weeks ago! Maz. XX

Moths (but not butterflies strangely), wasps, daddy long legs, deep water, heights - but the ones that can turn me into a wreck just thinking about them are spiders and flying. I'm getting a right panic on now! And yes cotton wool does make a noise. I can't bear it on my face. Jeanette

My 17 year old daughter has the weirdest phobia in that she cannot touch a wooden spoon or wooden handled knife unless it is wet, same with cotton wool. Mine is clowns, even ornaments of them give me shivers. Ughhh Yesterday I was at the butterfly farm in Edinburgh, and loved it, guess that would be a lot of you on heres idea of hell!

Wet wool sets my teeth on edge, moths, heights, the sea and having my photo taken! How do you define the difference between a phobia and a fear? Sue:-)

PennyDainty

PennyDainty Report 18 Apr 2004 15:54

Sue a fear is usually reasonable and a phobia is an unreasonable fear of something.

Samantha My friend Karen is terrified of buttons too. She thought she was alone and no-one else could have a phobia about such an everyday object. I will tell her about you when I next see her. My phobia is birds. I can't stand them especially pigeons when they're walking around you. I'm always petrified they will fly up to me. My grandson takes great delight in chasing them just to make me scream! The little darling! If one of my cats ever bring a bird indoors I am hysterical, even if it's dead. It's very strange because my Dad used to breed budgies when I was a child and I would walk into the aviaries with no problem at all. Sue

Mine's a bit wierd. I am terrified of wiring or pipes in dark places (eg wires runnng along the floor of the loft, under a car dashboard, or pipes on the inside of underground train tunnels). In fact, until I was in my 20s I couldn't sit in the front seat of the car because my feet would be below wires - even though they were behind moulded plastic I knew they were there and in a dark space. I've conquered the phobia to a certain extent now through sheer willpower, but if I come across pipes/wires in dark places unexpectedly (as I have this week because workmen removed a ceiling panel near my desk at work overnight, exposing some pipes) I get a funny turn. im glad someone else is scared of buttons - you can reassure your friend she is quite normal - EITHER THAT OR WE A BOTH COMPLETLY LOOPY!! the kids think it hilarous- but to me it is relly scary! my son had me in tears one day because he was a baby & had put one in his mouth - where he got it from i dont know! & i had to reach in his mouth to stop him swallowing it. it was only when i pulled it out i realised it was a button & i started screaming & crying!!! lol lol still - you have to laugh dont ya!!
