hi everyone :) I had to go for an MRI scan today as i twisted my good knee before xmas, i was told it wouldnt be pleasant but i wasnt prepared to how it really was. For all who have never had one, i wish ud never have to go through it. its a machine with like a tunnel and u have to lie on a bed and u go in the tunnel while it gives a special xray, its soooooooo noisy and claustraphobic, only way i can describe it is like being buried alive with roadworks going at the road right on top of u. was dreadful but all over now so im a happy bunny :) just thought id share my story jo x

oh jeeze might have to go for one in a few weeks time. they will have to find another way of looking cos i would have heart failure in anything enclosed like that.

thanks everyone :) i used to go in one for my brain (i think) but it was a lot wider with lights dont know if that was a diff mri scan or what lol

I have to have one every 3 or 4 month on my brain, horrible things, they put ur head in what can only be described as a vice, and the headphone/earmuff thingys do nothing to block out the noise, First time I almost fainted, not too bad now, just close my eyes and try to think nice thoughts,

I think that's a CAT scan - don't ask me what it means though.

Jo Sorry to hear about your knee, hope you are soon on the mend. I have never had one of those scans, but can imagine the feeling of claustraphobia. At least the scan is behind you now. Have a good weekend Lynda x

I HAS MRI LAST YEAR ON MY BACK FOUND IT VERY CLAUSTROPHIC AND HARD TO KEEP STILL WHEN YOU HAVE A PAIN AND THEY WON'T YOU TO LAY STILL. AND ISN'T IT THE WAY YOU ALWAYS GET AN ITCH THAT YOU CAN'T SCRATCH WHEN LAYING STILL. APART FROM THE WHIRRING NOISE IT WASN'T TO BAD AND AT LEAST YOPU CAN TALK TO THEM VIA A MICROPHONE. IT WAS PAINLESS COMPARED TO BI LATERAL SPINAL INJECTIONS I HAD IN JANUARY, THAT HURT!!!!!!!! SANDRA

Hi Joanne, MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging which basically means the long tunnel thing you lie in is an extremely powerful magnet. Tha CAT scan stands for computerised axial tomography which is a 3D Xray machine which uses the computer to focus the X rays exactly where they need to go. It X-rays you in thin "slices" and the computer builds up a 3D picture. Hope this answers your question. Janice

Hi Jo Glad to hear you're now a happy bunny :))) Interested to read your thread, because my hubby had an arthroscopy on his right knee this week. When he got there, the surgeon said he would go ahead with the op, or else he could have an MRI scan first then an op in a few weeks. He thought he may as well have the op while he was already there - just going to tell him your story and I'm sure he'll be pleased he made the right choice! Sorry for you though! Mandy x

I had a MRI scan last year on my shoulder, I was dreading it as my mum has had one and told me all about it, but fortunately I went to a hospital in Croydon where they have an open scan where there are no sides so not so scarey, but still very noisey, apparently it is the only one in the country, so I was lucky. Sue

I just have to wait for the results now. then i may need an op :( thanx everyone for sharing ur stories. jo
