Is it possible for a cover version to be better than the original? What examples can you think of?

Rick

Rick Report 1 May 2004 16:23

Saint Etienne - Only Love Can Break You Heart is miles better than the Neil Young original IMHO. Rick.

IMHO You can't hurry love: Supremes (1966): great song; P Collins (1982): rather good American Pie: Don McLean (1972): great song; Madonna (2000): total rubbish Tragedy: Bee Gees (1979): good song; Steps (1998): say no more Unchained Melody: The King of Covers - is there a definitive? Barbados: Typically Tropical (1975): get on down; Maxima (1993): total rubbish, even getting the wrong destination! Without you: Nilsson (1972): brilliant; Mariah Carey (1994): ok Tide is high: Blondie (1980): fine song; Atomic Kitten (2003): interesting twist Killing me softly: Roberta Flack (1973): brilliant; Fugees (1996): ok I beleive: Frankie Laine (1953): had style; Robson and Jerome (1995): were better actors in Soldier Soldier Suspicious Minds: Elvis (1969): the King!; Garath Gates (2002): still learning What do you think? Anymore ideas/

Sorry Lou and Deb but I too think Madonna's version was not a patch on the original - in all its full length glory!! My all time favourite song so there will be no mind-changing here! Maz. XX ps in fact the whole album is great too ... pps I do love virtually everything else Madonna has done though ...

maz life would be boring if we all liked the same things wouldnt it ? its strange though but i dislike most other madonna stuff i have her album called "something to remember" cus i love "crazy for you " and most of the other tracks r ok too lou

another controversial choice: I think Hush by Kula Shaker is better than the original by Deep Purple. Also All Along The Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix is better than Bob Dylan's original version although I don't mind Dylan's version.

Naomi in SW

Soft Cell's Tainted Love is better than original but I can't remember who sang it originally. Naomi

It was Gloria Jones

Kathleen

Kathleen Report 1 May 2004 20:58

I thought Sorrow by David Bowie better than the original, think it was The Merseys. Love Robert Palmer, Ill be your baby tonight, better than Bob Dylans, but the Dylan one better than Peters and Lee version. Cant decide whos version of Jealous Guy I prefer, as just love John Lennon and Brian Ferry versions, do think Brian Ferry is the master of cover versions though. Kathleen
