I agree that at particular moments in our lives, different songs become very special to us. My all time saddest song would have to be Barry Manilow singing Even Now simply because of the memories associated with it. Others include Bette Midler's Wind Beneath My Wings, Ella Fitzgerald's Every Time We Say Goodbye, Nat King Cole's When I Fall In Love, Don McLean's Crying, Abba's The Winner Takes It All and Cliff Richard's Miss You Nights. I once recorded a tape of all my favourite sad songs, but I couldn't listen to it because it made me too sad :o( Sue

"Whiter Shade of Pale," by Procal Harum,is a wonderful piece of music, however, a friend of ours chose it as the theme, for her wedding, However the organist wasn't quite up to it, and made a disastrous attempt at playing it...whenever, I hear it I think of the embarassment at what should have been a wondrous moment......

I think tears in heaven was written after Eric Claptons son died. Lovely piece and so sad, but love it. Angels by Robbie Williams was played at my best friends funeral a year ago, I can still hear him sing it, I can't listen to it with out a tear. But I would take pages up listing my sad songs, a bit of a big softy at heart!

Hi John, My vote goes to "Tears in Heaven" I am an Eric Clapton fan, so it is also one of my favorites. Two years ago my youngest son was taking guitar lessons and wanted an electric guitar and I said that he could have one once he learnt how to play "Tears in Heaven" He does not take lessons anymore and has his electric guitar. The problem is I think that I created a monster as his ambition in life is to play in a band. Lindy;-))

Historically, the second movement from Beethoven's 3rd symphony (the Eroica). Apparently Leopold Stokowski was conducting in New York the day JFK was shot in 1963 (I remember it well!). He came out during the interval to tell the audience of the assassination, and announced that the rest of the original programme had been scrapped. Instead, the orchestra would play the Eroica slow movement. More recently, how about the "Hymn to the Fallen" from Private Ryan? Trouble is, most of the military tunes on Remembrance Day bring me to tears - problem for my generation, how to make amends for all the blood shed and wasted on the western front, and then 20 years later against Hitler. My generation (post war) has spent most of its life trying to make up for the heroic sacrifice of earlier generations! Philip
