Max (in South London) looked up the GRO ref for my ggrandmother's birth certificate on a visit to the FRC in Oct 2003. It was my first experience of the generosity of other GC members - Thanks again Max

Lots of people from GC have helped me in a short space of time, just by being friendly and being there. I wouldn't like to name names in case I miss anybody out, but the title of First Mate has to go to Gaynor in Stoke Poges.

Allie Report 9 May 2004 19:12

I was helped indirectly by a lady called Monica Childs/Chiles, apologies for not being sure of the surname, but it was ages ago and I never see her name on the boards anymore. It was when the boards were in a different format and back then as I was a total novice I just used to read other peoples postings. I think I learned more from Monica in those first few months than I have done since. So if you are still around, many many thanks!! Allie xx

I remember that when I first joined the site, I did not even think about the message boards,,,just contacting possible relations. At the time there was no Records Office Board. I couldn't believe it when I saw max offering the lookups for EVERYONE!! She and other members like her have contributed so much to the success and 'familyness' of this site. It is a pleasure to be able to help others and I contribute when I can, following the example set by these GC pioneers!

Yvette Report 9 May 2004 20:18

The first thread i posted was answered by Clare Arthey, but as i was asking a fairly basic question it didnt 'help' me with my tree, however she was so nice that it gave me the confidence to come back and ask a bigger question and Lynda Worth answered. She was only able to give me half an answer, however it gave me a step in the right direction to finding my gggrandfathers family, and opened up a whole chunk of my family tree. Something i could never have done without her help. Yvette

Im blushing Yvette! Thanks for remembering. My 1st help was also by Monica Chiles and also Vera Bromage, Ive not seen any of these 2 helpful ladies around much but they could go by aliases!! And also Rosemary, who after a lot of help turns out we are vaguely related, quite spooky! Thanks to everyone, we all try and help each other as best we know how.

Vera Bromage, was my first helper. She was so patient and knowledgeable, I asked some really daft questions but nothing was ever too much trouble or too silly to answer. Some of the things she told me i still use everyday in my research. Of course I'd like to take this Opportunity, to thank each and everyone who has helped, been a freind or just a shoulder to cry on, too many to mention but you're all stars Shelli xxxxx

Believe it or not I think my first G.C. member to help me also was connected to my tree - Elton Rowe thread 18 Nov 2003. He was posting an 1891 lookup for Albert Howard who was marrried to an Ada. I knew one of my grandmother's sisters was Adaline so that was the connection. This was all about the same time a got heaps of help from Janet Stevens, Sarah Arkell, Ruth Taylor and Margaret Drummond who found all my Gullands in Scotland. I have had so much help from so many people - thankyou:-)))

Heather

Heather Report 10 May 2004 00:28

The first two people to help me were David Owen and Elizabeth Newman who trawled through information on census discs to find information on my family. I believe the info was in the original handwriting so I am very grateful for their help. Heather

I cannot recall for definite the first person to help me in some way but certainly one of the first would be Amanda Thacker who did a lookup for me, which proved useful and she was helpful and friendly. Max also later found some information for me, on one of her visits to the FRC, that led me to purchase the marriage certificate for my great-grandfather, something which had been eluding me for some time.
