You're all making me hungry, and it's only midday! My gran used to say, when we asked what was for tea,"Bread and pull it!" I reckon this was an expression from the great depression times of the 1930s. Yorkshire pud is supposed to play the same role, filling your stomach before you get to the roast beef. During my first year at uni in the 60's, my landlady and husband used to stuff me with Sunday meals in the good old fashioned Yorkshire way, being in York. First course was an enormous Yorkshire pud filling the plate and smothered with gravy. Second helping if you had room. Then on to roast beef plus veg & more gravy. Then for pudding proper we had a thick fruit tart and custard. Siesta in front of an open fire during the winter months, then high tea of salad followed by cake etc. No wonder my trim shape started on a downward path from that period! lol! Philip

This is great tucker Kylie! What is your husband's fav food? Serve him that for every meal. It seems that you can't please him whatever you do!! Was he like that when you got married?

I used to work on the street markets, and they called the "dead" period between christmas and spring "the kipper season" because, in the old days, kippers used to be the only thing they could afford ! Nowadays kippers cost a lot, so the "poor man's food" must be bread and water, as Mary said, ---- with maybe a bag of chips as a special treat ??
