I don't know if this one counts as a school ditty, the word 'difficulty' was recited in spelling form with the word mrs in front of each letter whenever we played skipping games - mrs-d mrs-i mrs-ffi mrs-c mrs-u mrs-lty, I had to stand up in class one day and spell it out in the conventional way and I'm afraid it came out the 'playground' way, to this day I still find it hard to spell it properly. Audrey.

Hi Audrey, we did that at school to. We has mrs before each letter of Portobello and others to help you spell were for Glasgow - Granny Likes A Small Glass O Whisky Edinburgh - Edward Dies In November Buried Under Robert Graham's House. Another song we sang Mrs McGuire sat in the fire The fire was too hot so she sat in the pot The pot was too wide so she sat in the Clyde And all the wee fishes swam up her backside

Christine I had never heard that one about Skinny Malinky until my 6 year old grandaughter stated singing it last month. Her Great Grandmother and her Great Great Aunt taught it to her. They were over here from Northern Ireland on holiday and said they used to sing it as children in Colraine. They are both in their 80s now, so it's been around a long time! The way my kids were taught to spell because....... Be Ever Careful And Use Sharp Eyes. My 20 year old still uses it! (but don't tell him I told you!) Sue

One more day of school, One more day of sorrow, one more day in this ole dump, and we'll be home tomorrow. God made the Bees, The bees make the Honey, We all do the rotten work, And the teachers get the money. Pounds, Shillings, pence, the teacher has no sense, he came to school, to act the fool, Pounds, shillings, pence.
