Hi daniel, I am interested in politics as a career too, though it's American politics that interest me! I'd love to work in Washington DC on the senate floor, or as an adviser. I'm a bit old to start as an intern(!), but at least i can study the subject-I'm going to do an OU course next year in American studies. Good luck with the article, and with your career plans--keep us up to date with your progress! Sal

Hi Sally, I don't intend to into writing as a career, politics is the plan, but i could use writing to work my way into it. The commission- I wish. I asked to do the article. I said I had an Idea to the editor and he let me write it. Fingers crossed he'll ask me again and maybe get paid.

Hi Daniel, I am very impressed--you are very articulate, and I like your style of writing. Are you planning to take it up as a profession? How did you get the commission? Let us know as soon as you hear when it will be published. I had some photos published a couple of years ago in 'Practical Photography'--I still remember the buzz it gave me. Good luck--and well done you!

Hi Joy I got your email too. I sent it off this morning happy with the peice. I can see what your saying about how I am wording it, but I want to keep a relaxed opening, if you know what I mean. I don't think how it is now is too bad. I have updated it the main message showing how it is with all the amendments.

Dan, I am glad that you have not implied it can all be learned on the Internet! - nothing could be further from the truth! and pleased that you don't mind constructive criticism. Regarding the sentence:- "You don't often hear the words youth and genealogy in the same sentence, but things are changing." If it were me writing the article, I would say, "You didn't used to hear / one didn't used to hear ...". Also:- "As a sixteen year old, you may not expect someone of my age to be interested in genealogy." Starting the sentence this way, you are addressing the reader as if he / she were a sixteen-year-old. I would say, "You may not expect someone of my age, a sixteen-year-old, to be interested in genealogy.". Other people have mentioned the spelling of whet, and other things. How about 'old fogey's pastime'?! Joking. Stick to what you think sounds right. I shall look forward to reading your article when it is in print. I feel privileged that you wanted to share it with us. Joy

You have got good eyes. Yep and i have just fixed it. And the magazine will be Your Family Tree Magazine at the price of 4.99, although i don't know if the price will shoot up with my work in, i don't know. I would think that it owuld be 2 or 3 months untill it appears as they usually commission the sort of articles i have written in advance

Well done, Daniel, it's very good. Can I just ask if you meant to say 'bitten BY the genealogical bug'? Sorry, don't mean to sound picky! Good luck with your article.

Daniel it reads beautifully, well done, you've been given some good advise. Most articles for print are proofed and edited make sure you read the finished 'article' the removal of some words or punctuation can change the whole connotation.Good luck you've worked very hard.

Hi I think you should definitely stick with 'sport'. Sounds great as you said. Everyone will know you don't actually think it is a sport, but as footie is a sport to the young, genealogy is a sport to the olds! Hope you understand what I mean. I think you've done a great job. From Joanne, 31 years young!!

Felicity

Felicity Report 1 Aug 2004 00:39

You're right Daniel. I hadn't taken the analogy quite that far, and I'm glad that you don't want to change it.

Daniel

Daniel Report 1 Aug 2004 00:37

Well yes you are right in saying that i read it from someone else and i suppose it is a bit cheeky and humourous. But when you think about it does become a bit like a sport. You know, making the visits to the local record office, hunting the elusive facts out of the pages of text, having a feeling of victory and success when you do. Like you have won gold so to speak. I'm not going to change it.

Felicity

Felicity Report 1 Aug 2004 00:31

In Daniel's defence, I think his use of 'sport' is a) taken from someone else, b) intended to be humorous and c) slightly tongue-in-cheek. Correct me if I'm wrong, Daniel? I agree with him that it has something of a 'ring' to it even if it is technically incorrect. :-)
