Jenny, Tribal pages is correct Daniel your example is not the same Granfathers sisters daughter is 1st cousin once removed. You are all doing what I said not to!! You work from the common ancestor!!! not brothers and sisters!!! Blobolob (told you it melts your brain)

Daniel Report 10 Aug 2004 18:09

The lady in question, namely Ruth, will probably answer for herself soon, she contacted me through Genes.

Margaret

Margaret Report 10 Aug 2004 18:02

1st, 2nd, 3rd refers to nearness in blood, once, twice etc removed refers to generation. So Fred and Charlie are brothers. Fred's son Harry and Charlie's daughter Mabel are cousins. Fred and Mabel are first cousins once removed, ditto Charlie and Harry. Mabel's children will be Fred's first cousins twice removed (2 generations apart). Mabel's children will be Harry's 1st cousins once removed. Harry's children and Mabel's children will be 2nd cousins. Helen

Tell the lady in question that you have spoken to some extremely knowledgeble and intelligent people and she is wrong. :-)

Your are second cousins. You have a common great grandparent (your grandads dad is hers as well) there is no removed as you are on the same level. You should always move up to find the common ancestor(s) talking about Grandads brothers grandaughter will mess you brain up. Moving from the common ancestor you count the G's including the one in granparent Grandparent =1st cousins GGrandparent = 2nd cousins etc.... Bob

Janice

Janice Report 10 Aug 2004 17:54

Lynne, That's incorrect. Your cousins are the offspring of your parents' brothers and sisters. Children of cousins are 2nd cousins to each other, and 1st cousins once removed to the parents of the other one. Janice

Andy(GC)

Andy(GC) Report 10 Aug 2004 17:52

Lynne, counted the G's and it's still only one if you check the punctuation. LOL

Janice

Janice Report 10 Aug 2004 17:50

Her granddad and your granddad are brothers, the next generation down (parents) are 1st cousins to each other , and you and the granddaughter are 2nd cousins to each other. Janice

Daniel

Daniel Report 10 Aug 2004 17:50

Need another opinion. I still think it's 2nd cousins

Lynne

Lynne Report 10 Aug 2004 17:50

Andy Count the G's. If you share a grandfather you are 1st cousins, if you share a great grandfather you are second cousins and if you share a great great grandfather you are third cousins, etc. Lynne
