The editor's back in office tommorow so I should have an answer of whether the artcle is good enough for the magazine. You all seemed please with it so I think it'll be ok. I shall update you tommorow.

Certainly couldn't have it done so well without your help. Was it you who said you were once a councillor?

Joy

Joy Report 15 Aug 2004 19:29

Yes, Dan - from 1983 to 2003 - Ferndown, then West Moors, then Sandleheath. My father, also, served the community partly by serving on Beckenham Borough Council. And my sister did so in Worcester. Joy

Joy, Isn't Ferndown Hampshire? I have two friends living there. Sylvia

Sylvia, Ferndown and West Moors are in Dorset - betwixt Wimborne and Ringwood. Sandleheath is in Hampshire, just. Dan - sorry about the ol ntl! You wait until the local elections come up, every 4 years, areas differ to make life confusing, and you have to be 21 (sorry, don't know why), go to the clerk to the council to get a form, get two people to sort of second you (can't remember the right expression without looking it up), fill in the form, give it back by set date, wait until election time to see if there is a vote or if you are on the council without being elected with voting if you see what I mean (depends how many people there are on the council and how many people apply). In between the four years some people might move away and resign or resign for some other reason, so there would be a vacancy declared, and you can apply to the clerk then, say you'd like to be on the council and give reasons why. You could be coopted if no one else applies, or if others do then the council decides betwen you, and then you or whoever is coopted. And that's it in a nutshell. It's never been political for me. Have only served at a lowly level, parish / town council. Never been chairman / mayor, never wanted to be. Can be very frustrating, can be worthwhile. Joy

So you never had to choose a party to stand for?

Joy

Joy Report 16 Aug 2004 11:33

Quick reply from work, Dan - no politics at parish / town council level, you're just a councillor. They appear unfortunately in my opinion at borough / district level. Just a personal opinion. Back to earn my keep! Joy

Indeed. I emailed another office guy today just in case the editor isn't back (even though he said 16th) or his email is broke or something. I'll be back.

Just wanted you to know I'd not forgotten you! (even midst some anniversary sadness, and selling / looking for a new home!). Joy

A Reply! Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you about your opinion column. The article you sent in was very well-written. Great structure and I like the way the end ties back to the beginning. There is barely anything we would change about it. A really good job. We would like to use it in issue 18 of Your Family Tree, which goes on sale on 27 October.
