Im absolutely terrified of the dentists, but it turns out that i need my wisdom tooth taken out because it is impacted. Is there anyway out of this? What would happen if i just left it? Any advice greatfully received

I dont' know what will happen if you leave your tooth, but you will be asleep and won't feel any pain when they are taking it out, except in your purse. Sorry I'm no help.

Don't leave it..... i left mine and now it's infected with a cyst which in itself isn't a problem but it is as if that cyst bursts my whole gum will be infected!! having mine out later this year too!! All 4 of them even though i have already had one out!! ;o)

Hi Hayley, you sound just like me, a terrible worrier!! I had all four of my wisdom teeth out because they were impacted, but they were done in hospital - great because I didn't know a thing about it, and afterwards it's uncomfortable rather than painful. Don't leave it though, you will have infections etc and the pain of them will be worse! Take note of other people's replies, they are very helpful, and you will be fine. Let us know nearer the time and we will all send you hugs! Mandy :)

Hayley, I would be brave and go through with it but explain your fears to the dentist beforehand. I had a bad experience years ago with a dentist and i ended up having 8 teeth took out in the end. i still don't like dentists and petrified of them and next month ive got to have a filling done i dont want to go, but i know if i dont have it done then it will get worse and as my husband always says to me, its best going whenever something needs doing, as it could get infected and go into my gum so its best having the treatment done for whatever reason before it gets too major. :-) xx

Sympathising with you, Hayley, Am lucky enough to have a dentist that specialises in nervous patients ( he is marvellous!) Had same problem 2 years ago, I opted for sedation, and don't know anything about it!, all I can remember is the needle prick, in my arm. Didn't feel a thing. No problem since...

My wisdom tooth (didn't even know I had any!!) cracked and got badly infected and I couldn't wait to have it taken out. I had an injection to numb it and to be honest I was pleased to get rid of it. It's funny but I am more scared of fillings than extractions (weird or what) and usually plump for sedation when having a filling. Don't know if you've been sedated before but when I've had it the time has just flown by - I must have nodded off last time as I heard this terrible snoring noise then I realized it was me - very embarrassing!!! )I tried to cover up by coughing but I wonder how long I'd been doing it. Hayley I am about to post my own dental thread!! Some people will remember that I am phobic too. Had 2 crowns a few months ago - great support from my friends on GC/GR - but now I need an extraction. You MUST tell your dentist you are phobic - if you don't he can't be expected to guess! Make sure you have everything explained to you in advance and take someone with you who you trust and who is sympathetic. Had my crowns with sedation - still cried beforehand, but don't remember a thing about the procedure, the drugs have amnesiac properties. However you may need general anaesthetic for impacted wisdoms - which is even better as you won't have a clue what's happening! Good luck and let us know if you have an appointment and we will all cross everything for you. Maz. XX

Hayley I am going on Wednesday morning to have an extraction. Well, thats the plan anyway. Am currently taking Kalms in the hope that I will be able to let the dentist give me injections rather than have to be sedated. So think of me!! Maz. XX

Glenys the Menace! Report 13 Sep 2004 15:48

Hi Hayley - get it done! I had an impacted wisdom tooth extracted as it could have got infected. Thought for the day: how do dentists feel about themselves going to the dentist? I've often wondered - there must be some of them with that phobia. Someone also gave me some (joke) advice years ago on visiting the (male) dentist: before he starts, put your hand up his smock and say "now, we're not going to hurt eachother, are we!" Oops, hope nobody took offence at that! Take care! Glenys.

Anne Report 13 Sep 2004 16:12

lol Glenys, I'll have to remember that one. Lynda

Thanks Lynda and Maz, I mention that joke to others when they have to go ............. Trouble is, my dentist is a dishy 30-something man, and I haven't had the guts to mention the joke to him! Don't think I will, somehow. Anyway, good luck Maz on Wednesday; I'll be thinking of you then. I've got 2 fillings to look forward to in November - yeuk! On that happy note, 'night 'night. Glenys. x
