I can see both sides of the coin I do think it sometimes goes to far, eg: Percys, grandmothers sister in law. ect. (well you know what i mean), especially if the recipient is too young or doesnt know anyone who will reply to the thread anyway. I wont add my 2 kids birthdays ( age 5 & 9 )for that very reason. However THANK YOU June, for my Birthday greetings in May. I got such a thrill when I read all the kind words added, Long may you go on adding to this board, if it makes one person happy for that day then its well worth the space it takes up. Elaine xx

I agree with Mandy - the thread did appear to be personal as only one person does the well wishes for Birthdays etc on the board, and I have to say Bob that you did admit to expecting an "arguement" when you started your thread. June IS my Mum and I would support her to the end - I know their is alot of thought and effort put into these messages. However, hysterical I was not, and your reply to mine was a typical response to criticism. As for capitals - again is it REALLY important? We are all aware of what should be in capitals and in lower case, however these are Bithday / Anniversary greetings after all - and celebrated as such. We are not in the workplace on GC are we now..... or maybe some of you are IRL .... I don't know ;-)) Anyway that said, I would like to re affirm what I also said last night, that there are far more important issues to debate over, and many more upsetting events going on in the world. We are each entitled to our own opinion and that's how it should be. However, perhaps a little more thought should be given before we criticise those who give up their own personal time to perform acts of kindness by fulfilling requests and more often than not - making someone's day I won't add anymore to this thread as I think it really is depressing to read...... So in my Mum's words: "Live and let Live" we are all friends here. :-)))) G xxx

I am beginning to think as soon as things calm down on here another antagonistic thread is started. And for what. We all pay our subs as has been said. What's the point of starting another row. We are not all in the same situation and it's true many people don't see another human being from one day to the next why knock somebody giving them a bit of recognition. Keep it up June Dianexx

Repeating what I said earlier: June, please don't stop doing this, it's really kind and thoughtful of you, and VERY much appreciated. Bob, I (and probably others) only became defensive because it is nearly all the time the work of one person - June - and therefore the thread was personal.

June I was not targeting you or anyone else! It was a general comment. I fully support anything goes on the general board but these messages are obviously relevant only to the people involved. That's my point. A separate board would be ideal, perhaps this thread might get us one. Getting things done, that's what discussion is all about isn't it? We don't have to go on the defensive so much because someone offers a different viewpoint :)) Bob

I am with June on this - this site is a link to the outside world for some members - and to have someone say HAPPY BIRTHDAY can make such a difference to people.

June

June Report 5 Sep 2004 21:49

If you dont mind, I would like to add my comments to this thread, I dont think any of you realise how many members are people living on their own, I certainly didn't. I never expected to get emails thanking me because that was the only reference that had been made to their birthday. There are a lot of sad lonely people out there, members of Genes! Both men and women. I agree when I started, it was intended for members only but it is hard to know who is a member, some husbands and wives are both members. I have asked GC/R to set up a separate board on two occasions and have not even received a reply. So instead of causing an argument over this, will you please email GC/R, and request a separate board. Then if they set up a Birthdays/Anniversaries Board you wont be troubled, although some of us will still have to skip what we consider "unimportant" on General Topics. I think its time we had a little bit of " LIVE AND LET LIVE" on this board, remember, we all pay our subs and are entitled to free speech. By the way Birthday and Anniversary lovers, I will still be putting the threads on, in fact a competative site has started it too, they liked the idea! Thankyou my supporters June

Happy belated Birthday Kim, and to my sister Rosalie as well on the same day (who I forgot about). See, we men can be hypocritical, if not hysterical :)) Bob

Joy, she usually puts a thread up a month or so before asking for birthdays or anniversaries the following month etc. However, I imagine she keeps a little black book for future reference! Mandy :)

Of course people can talk about other things - and everyone has points of view - but it just seems sad to me that these points of view tend to knock the kindness of other people on the site. I've said enough - I stopped looking at the site for a while cos it was getting me down - it's getting me down again!! I was going to say half an hour ago that the new site wasn't as good as this one - I may review that...!! Kim

We are all entitled to our own opinions and long live democracy. It does no harm to anyone but it seems to me like a thankless task, I'm sure she has better things to do with her time than make all these posts however poeple asked her to do it and so she does. Now does she please the few of you that object or does she please the many who have requested the posts? I don't ask you to agree with me as I don't agree with you, but please lets put a little persective on this.

BobClayton Report 5 Sep 2004 19:32

In have no problem with people sending “good wishes” to each other . What I am saying is that to an outside viewer the board will be of no interest. I fully understand the “grand scheme of things” I have two severely handicapped children one of whom is in the last years of his life (MD). This does not mean we cannot discuss other issues surely? I tried to offer a constructive comment but if you want to polarize in to “camps,” do so. Bob

Margaret Report 5 Sep 2004 19:24

Bob Agree, its getting out of hand. Greetings to all and sundry, not just GC members. Dont want to be flippant, but there are a lot of other things going on in the world. Maybe its time to give this birthday/anniversary thing a bye bye, no more. Margaret

Anyway; I wasn't using the message boards when it was my birthday (I think I missed it by a week!!) so if anyone wants to wish me a belated happy birthday for August 12th, I'd be very pleased to hear from you!! (er...joke! - for all of those with a sense of humour bypass!) Kim xx Yes - that is a good idea, Lynda!
