Is a JAFFA Cake a Biscuit or a Cake? Ours are kept in the biscuit tin but should they really be there? PS: Java cakes are nice too!

Wasn't there a debate once about jaffa cakes being biscuits, something to do with whether you paid VAT on them or not. Biscuits you don't pay VAT on, cakes you do, I think. Someone may know other wise. Jaffas in New Zealand are round chocolate covered sweets, which they roll down the floors in the cinemas. Ros

I found this in a Jaffa Cake debate- an interesting slant on the problem "in a test case McVities challenged a ruling that the product was a biscuit and won by showing that when exposed to air all cakes go hard and biscuits go soggy...Jaffa Cakes do indeed go hard...so they were and still are classified as cakes!

Have been puzzled by this as well!, tapped it in on google search, and was quite surprised, think it it some kind of coffee cake (made by Nestle, iced mini java cakes!), am wondering if this is what daniel means?.. think he wants us to think jaffa cake, am sure he will be replying soon!.. sounds nice, where can you buy them?..

Despite what I personally think (biscuits !!), I think that strictly speaking they are named correctly - they're cakes. The Oxford English Dictionary defines a biscuit as a "Small thin flat peice of pastry baked crisp" Jaffa cakes are neither crisp, not pastry. It further defines a cake as; 1. sweet food made from a mixture of flour, eggs, butter, sugar etc, baked in a certain shape and size and normally decorated. 2. (tellingly) other food mixture cooked in a round flat shape (eg potato cake) Sadly, against common sense and common perception, I think they're cakes. Paul
