That's awful and at only 12. My daughter has suffered from heavy periods too. When we saw the nurse to ask about the pill to try and control it she was a bit anti, which is fair enough. She put her on some tablets that she takes three times a day when it's bad and this greatly reduces the bleeding. Just found the box they are called, Mefenamic Acid capsules. Hope you get the help you need, this is a rotten problem. Dianex

Lisa - I sympathise wholeheartedly! Even now, sometimes I get really bad pains and feel nauseous. I do agree, visit to the docs is best, there are probably specific drugs which will hopefully help. However, I found the best over-the-counter stuff was Feminax which has a muscle relaxant as well as painkiller - not sure if it's still available - also, don't try to do anything remotely strenuous as it relaxes ALL your muscles!

I really sympathise. I started my periods at 13 and was often sent home. Pains, vomiting, headaches. you name it I suffered. Everyone said oh you'll grow grow out of it or wait until you've had a baby! Thankfully doctors are so much more understanding now and no one should have to suffer. I used to take somehintg from the chemists but I think you will be better getting a doctor's advice. In the meantime a hot water bottle, warm bed and lots of tlc is just what she needs. Jane

don't think you should have to wait until next week for the appointment. Insist on getting her seen today! Firm & insistent with the receptionist... Good luck!

Definitely get the doctor to sort this one out. Poor kid, having to go through that at 12. I've found something that is very comforting and much easier than a hot water bottle (particularly if you're not at home!) - they are pain relief pads called FemEase and you can get them in packs of two from Boots. They're just under £5 for the pack of two, so not cheap, but one lasts all day. I just use one on the worst day. They are slim and 'stick' to your tummy, although it helps to wear bigger knickers for a bit of security! The gel inside warms up and they are wonderful. Hope you get something from the doctor. Lisa, also forgot to say that my friend's daughter is the same age and suffers in the same way - she thinks the heat pads are brilliant. And until you get something from the doctor, painkillers with codeine in them are really good (would have to check the age on them though). Mandy xx

Nanna Gaynor (June nr Preston's Daughter) Report 6 Oct 2004 12:44

Hi Lisa! Poor thing, my daughter also used to have terrible periods but like most have said already this was helped by painkillers from the doctor on prescription. Also when she got to about 16 she started having strange "do's" where she just used to become zombie-like for 2 weeks out of 4. We were very worried and after several tests, including tests for epilepsy, and hospital visits with no definate outcome. She seems to have things under control now with the pill, seems it was hormonal. I know how much of strain it can be for you too, my daughter needed loads of love and attention when she was in pain (as you would expect) but it isn't easy. Hugs for both of you. G xxxx :-)))

Jane Report 6 Oct 2004 12:50

I know what I used to take - Feminax. They really stopped the pain and made me feel better. Glad to hear you have a sympathetic female doctor. I think only a woman can really understand these things. Jane

Your daughter has my full sympathy. But I can highly recommend Mefanemic Acid, not only does it stop the pain but it will lighten her periods as well. Just ensure she takes them with food. Give her a big hug from me.
