If I ever go out for a meal in a restaurant. I always wait till I have finished each course then pop putside for a quick fag. Just because I smoke I dont like to upset other people. But no I dont think it should be banned. Their are restaurants where you can choose smoking or non smoking. Why ban that?

I hate going home after an evening out with my clothes stinking of cigarette. I would love to see it banned in all public places including pubs. They only have themselves to blame, if they had paid out for proper efficient extractor systems (and I believe they exist), people probably would not have started to campaign against it. There is a pub in Gloucester which is totally non smoking and their trade has increased. Anyway why should all the bar staff have their lives put at risk? Tony used to smoke, gave up once, went back to it after 7 years then gave up finally 11 years ago. he also didn't smoke in the house the second time he took it up. the RN were to blame for him smoking with their cigarette allowance. He is now totally against smoking in public places, especially restaurants. Having just returned from Tenerife where smoking is allowed in all restaurants and people smoke between course - w even saw one british woman smoking while she was eating!!!- I am pleased that at least most restaurants here have an area set aside for non smokers, unfortunately the smoke still drifts. Nicola, I don't understand your remark about putting a child into a pushchair, it wouldn't give me cancer? Would it? Which is what passive smoking does. Ann Glos

i know the answer. ban smoking in england and scotland but let them carry on smoking in wales. that way all the filthy smokers will move there and let the rest of us breathe clean air! (gave up a month ago!!)

ime a non-smoker,but i also realise how difficult it can be for some people to stop, the withdrawal symptoms can be as strong,as if trying to come off class A drugs. there are also mental health issues, where cigarettes have a calming effect on patients, and gradually smoking a joint,to overcome MS,parkinsons side effects, and pain. nichola is quite right, having a kiddy in a push chair/buggy,is exposing that child to the extremes of pollution, but most parents do it...the taxes collected from smokers,is incredible, without them, prices would increase, jobs would be lost........area for smokers/areas for non smokers. bryan.

This is not a comment in any way but I did find it amusing to read. Apparently there's a pub (in Yorkshire I believe) that has a sign at the bar:- This is a smoking pub, The Landlord smokes, The bar staff smoke, The regulars smoke, If you want fresh air - p*** off outside - it blows a gale up here. no your right ann, it wouldnt give you cancer, just your child. there is no such thing as smoking-related illnesses , its an excuse, also when your told that by doctors etc, people except it, so are happy with the answer. never once questioning the evidence etc. passive smoking does not give people cancer, to me i read up on things, not what the goverment want to to know or what they say. ive done my ownresearch into things, car fumes have more pollutionin etc, yes they do give you cancer if you inhale them, also in order for you to have cancer, you have to have the gene in your body. my whole family including myself have had to go through the cancer screening, as its passed on etc, funny thing is everyone in my family dies of cancer, none of them smoke, nor the ones who have had it go into pubs etc. so????. banning smoking, yes it will affect business, change always does. didnt change on here change the way people were etc. if they had both then people canmake there own choices, just like we do when we choose to speed, drink and drive, eat fatty foods etc, . its all about choice, if thats taken away then what do we have, nothing. id like the goverment to stop smoking and selling fags , drink etc, for a 3 months, then see how it affect us, as it would. you can tripple everything you pay out. then you'd see everything crashing down, etc. also, yes smokers do smell of fags, but what about all the none smoker who smell, please, LOL, also at least smokers have a reason for bad breath, none smokers dont, what there excuse,LOL.:-)

lol Mags:D Smoking! I know smokers & non smokers who have died young from smoking-related illnesses and smokers who have lived to ripe old ages - the frenchwoman Jeanne Calment who lived to 122 smoked until she was 117 - how long do you wanna live!! But I think pubs, clubs and restaurants should have clear and separate smoking areas and decent air conditioning OR opt to be smoking or non-smoking. What really pees me off are non smokers who opt to sit in smoking areas and then whinge!!

Smokers disgust me. I think it rots their brains as a well as lungs. I have seen brand new carpets in pubs ruined overnight because the can't be bothered to use the ashtrays. Worst of all is to go in places like Burger King and McDonalds and see young mothers blowing smoke all over their babies, what choice do they have? Only about 20% of people smoke yet the smokers keep on about their rights and fail to understand they don't have the right to kill others. Some smokers even seem upset when you move away from them, as if you should sit and share their drug addiction. What ignorance. Bob

Debbie Report 6 Oct 2004 18:12

Robert Well I have never been to a Mcdonalds or burger king where you can smoke. I am a smoker and I am not one of those that smokes near other people. You say smokers disgust you well I am disgusted with some non smokers (only some) that dosn't seem to understand how hard it is to give up I have been smoking for 21 years, and it is hard.

I know Terri, I will do it one day but I expect like you did, I keep coming up with allsorts of excuses. I have got a good reason to give up as we have just bought a house which is more expensive than the one now. But what with all the hassles of moving I keep saying when wev'e moved.

I hate people who eat on the street - so I shall ban it. I hate people who drive their car just to go a short distance - so I shall ban journeys under a mile. I hate drunks - so I shall ban drink. I hate gamblers - so I shall ban gambling. Nice idea but I wouldn't stand a chance. Everyone should have the right to do what they want, so let's have smoking rooms and non-smoking rooms. In a local coffee shop they have about ten tables for smokers and about 40 for non-smokers. Guess where standing room only is - the smoking part. Freedom for EVERYONE. Not just those who shout the loudest.

nichola Smoking does not give you cancer, But It increases your risk of developing it. You have a higher chance of getting cancer than if you are a non smoker. It has been proved that smoking is directly related to lung cancer. Even though some people , who have never smoked also developed the disease, they may have been a passive smoker , breathing other peoples cigarettes in. ( Roy Castle) Also some cancers are not geneticly related. Some cancers present in a faulty gene which can run in familys, some cancers are just one offs in a person with no family history. As for kids in pushchairs getting cancer, If I had put my childrens pushchair behind every cars exhaust then maybe so, But pushing my kids along the pavement is different to a grown adult blowing smoke directly over my kids (yes this has happened) Besides newer & better fuel is being introduced now, which is supposed to be cleaner, also when you have a mot done, your cars emissions are tested and if you are over a certain level you fail. DAVID Being a non smoker, I try to sit in non smoking places. sometimes its not possible, and yes i do moan as its my health thats affected. If i went into a pub stinking like a tramp how many people would complain of the smell, everyone I bet. Then the smokers may realise what its like to feel ill at a smell Elaine (collecting shampoo & bathcubes hehe)

Debbie, McDonalds and Burger King don't operate no smoking througout their outlets just some. The local shopping center in Castleford is no Smoking but the BK inside is not, so people go into a food outlet for a smoke. How crazy can you get! You can't compare smoking with other things. I have never heard of anyone dying of passive drinking or eating!! Bob
