1984 The start of the year-long miners' strike, the result of one woman's vendetta against a trade union. Arthur Scargill warned of a hit list of 50 pits (he underestimated - it was over 150). The year that resulted in the much increased dependency upon imported fuels to this country and a serious trend towards the depletion of natural gas stocks owing to their use for power generation, a change of a great deal more significance than a few thousand telephone jobs in the Home Counties to India. I remember it well.

1984 was when me and my boyfriend (now husband) went on our first holiday abroad together, to Aegina in Greece. I remember the music was George Michael's Careless Whisper and Eartha Kitt's Where is my baby? which were played everywhere. nell

Sept 27th 1984 my first child was born, I weighed less than I do now BEFORE he was born (boo-hoo), my hair was all one colour (!!!) and I hadn't yet endured two stroppy teenagers!! But I wouldn't change 1984 for the world.

I was 10 turning 11 at the end of the year. I remember writing all the words to Madonna's "Like a Virgin" so I could learn them but would just hum the word Virgin as I didn't know what it meant really and thought it was a bit naughty!

I thought the thread was going to be about how we are now living under the circumstances (Thought Police (political correctness); doublespeak (spin); eradication of history and heritage (House of Lords reform, foxhunting); and everything else that George Orwell predicted so accurately, other than he got the date 13 years too early!
