I do mine in the oven Kylie cause it's the only way you can do water roast,a way of getting your roast tatties using very little fat ,cooking in water but still having a crisp coating with all the taste of ordinary ones ,great for people with high colesterol.Fred.ptfg.

I used to work as a weekend cook in an old peoples home. One year my shift fell on boxing day and chips were on the menu - Id never had to do them before. For the life of me I couldnt light the huge, gas-fired frier and neither could anyone else. In desperation, I parboiled the chipped potatoes, then bunged them in roasting trays in the oven with some oil. They were fantastic and everyone raved about them. So I never use a chip pan any more, its chips in the oven for me.

In the oven... they are best that way....... mind you I did once use the frying pan, it was a long time ago but I forgot to put them in, so I deep fried some already boiled potatoes - not a bad substitute but not as good as the real thing G x

I agree with you Paul, too many people go for convenience foods these days. I was surprised on my recent visit to England that even in a pub I had convenience foods too. Only one pub had a fresh cooked dinner. It's cheaper too to prepare foods yourself. I always go to the market on a Friday and then wash and prepare the vegetables for the freezer. This way I have more time in the week for other things. I often cook meat for a couple of days and potatoes for a couple of days. Gives me more time too. I do have a microwave now, but wouldn't have one until six months ago. Sylvia xxx

I do too. I started fluffing them up after draining after seeing Delia Smith do it on tv, makes them really nice and crispy. I love them, but unfortunately since my stomach problems this last year only have 2 every now and them. sob sob! Diane

I pre boil mine first, then shake them in the pan to fluff them up....Roast potato's should be roasted and not fried, I like to add rosemary to mine.

Paul - it IS sad, if people are forgetting how to cook, I think the trend is that way, but from what I've seen on here, there are still plenty of enthusiastic cooks! Let's hope you're passing the knowledge on, folks!

My mum makes the best roast potatoes! She par-boils them first whilst heating some olive oil in a deep roasting tin. Then he puts the potatoes in the tin and cooks them in the oven. She serves them with dried rosemary and rock salt on... lovely!

It's because they are low fat, Paul - that's why we buy 'em. Got to watch the cholesterol, you see. Joy

because I prefer to cook my own. Yorshire puddings, pancakes - these are NOT difficult things to cook !! I should add, I understand why people with lots of kids etc buy them, for convenience, but some people are just lazy lol
