I have achy legs and find it very hard to get to sleep now. I don't know if it has anything to do with the menapaus? I have hot flushes so bad I think I will spontaniously combust any day now. This has gone on for the last 5 yrs (I am 49) and don't want to go on HRT. helppppppp if you can :) Pat

Maybe I was just lucky, but the only way I knew I had gone through the menopause was when the periods stopped. I am 55 now. Never been on HRT and best thing is that I dont have to worry about birth control.

Can't speak from experience Pat but I seem to have read that Natural Health shops sell something that I think is called Black Kohosh (or similar) that is supposed to be a natural help for hot flushes. If you mean restless legs I believe tonic water is supposed to help because of something in it (can't remember what) but you can also get tablets with it in. I'm a great help aren't I!! Perhaps I should come back when I've done a bit of research :))))))))))) Chrissie

The best thing I did for myself was to go on HRT. Every bone in my body ached and there were days when I could not get up in the morning. My doctor even sent me for a bone density test thinking that I might have osteoporosis. Some women go through menopause without a hitch but others have a very rough time. Statistics have shown that the highest rate of suicide in women are those that are menopausal. I wish you well. Lindy;-)))

Beware of Black Kohosh. It is meant to be quite toxic and can have nasty side effects

Hiya all, Thanks for your replies. Memory loss is a thing, I find I forget folks names when I have known them for years and talk to them daily. I sometimes use unrelated words in a sentance like (put the patatoe on darling) when I mean kettle. lol aint that weird. As for blood tests, when you are going through the menapause the test as to be done at the right time. A friend of mine had stopped her periods and was having flushes, she went for a test and was told she had the hormones of a 21 yr old, needless to say we never heard the last of it. It is deff a reverse of puberty with daft thoughts thrown in for good measure. (or did I have daft thoughts then as well lol) Pat x

I had to have a total hysterectomy 2 years after my menopause started. Take HRT in Oestrogen patches. Herbal therapy includes: Alfalfa and Black Cohosh for their oestrogenic properties. Sage and Vitex Agnus Castus for hot flushes. St John's Wort, Vervain and Skullcap for depression/anxiety. Courtesy of Miram Stoppard from her book Menopause published by DK and priced about £10. ISBN 0-7513-3426-x Brilliant book! Viv

I have been really lucky and had almost no symptoms at all. After my Mum died in 1997, my periods stopped, although they had been normal up till then. I was just 48. I had occasional hot flushes, but nothing major. My best friend had a hysterectomy when she was 40 and was put on HRT. After taking it for 15 years, she decided that was enough and was recommended Menopace tablets. She swears by them, as does another friend of mine who is just starting her 'change'. Might be worth trying them from Boots or other chemists. Sue
