I live three miles from Aberfan and this has been going on for some time. The park has become very run down, so Merthyr Tydfil council thought it would be better used for housing than being left neglected. M.

I have also signed as I think it is disgraceful; however, I am now wondering why the community at large have allowed such a thing to come about? I know that many of the families of those who were killed moved after the disaster, but there surely must be many there still who would hate to see the memorial, provided from the donations of many many folks touched by the plight throughout the world, removed forever. Does anyone know anything of a local petition on the ground in the area - I havent seen anything on the national news, and I would have thought that the outcry on national telly would have been enough to make Merthyr Council change their tune. No excuses for nudging this up. After signing the petition I visited the various sites giving details of the Aberfan disaster - very very touching to be reminded of what happened (with the exception of Google search no.25 which brought up a porn site, when I thought I would be visiting the Merthyr Council site! - still, enough of that!) There are pictures of the Memorial Park available to see, and it looks a lovely place. I can only think that in recent years Merthyr Council have not thought fit to spend any money on maintaining it and hence the need to sell (and spare them the cost of maintaining it properly) Have a look at the various sites - read the eye witness reports, and the quotes from those who were there at the time - you will be moved to sign the petition I can guarantee it. I clearly remember this tragedy. I was a young woman, travelled home every night by train, and the middle-aged business man opposite me put down his newspaper and started crying. We didnt have TV at home and I had somehow missed what was going on. I can see that front page to this day. If the memorial is so badly run-down, surely an appeal to the national press would produce more than enough cash to keep it going. Im off to sign the petition.

Could we make it 5000 through Genes Reunited? I hope so. For those of you who are too young to perhaps remember the disaster, I BEG you to visit the sites and see the images and read the testimonials. We should never forget the "price of coal" and it's effect on us all Jacqui
