JackyJ1593 Report 31 Oct 2004 20:44

My daughter at 15 says she is too old now for trick or treat and asked to have some friends around tonight to watch a scaryDVD. Except one of the girls doesn't do scary so they have somehting else. But...... before they went to watch the DVD they have put halloween night lights and lamps outside the house, a big spider and web on the door and got the sweets ready. Everytime there is a knock on the door the whole lot come thundering down the stairs - there are 3 girls with dainty ???? feet and 2 lads, one of whom wears size 14 shoes!!! I did offer her a party tonight but again ' she has outgrown that sort of thing'! Luckily we live in an area where I or my daughter know all the children who call. So far tonight about 8 callers in groups of 3 - 8. They are having such great fun (those in the house and out of it!) and it is good to see so much preperation going into something. They only call at houses where there are children which I think is good. Jacky :-)

My two youngest got dressed up and went out with one of my older kids (15) this evening but they only went to the houses of folk nearby who all have children who also called at ours! All kids were polite and happy with whatever sweets they were given they all said Thankyou and Goodbye (and yes they are council estate kids) I still have some treats left but no-one has called in the past hour... when treats are gone I usually stick a sign out saying 'sorry too late' and they dont bother to knock! Bye the way not all council estate kids are bad! Shaz :-)

i live in a nice place, just there's a council estate that is full of annoying little bastards just up the road. I'm not snobby or anything, just that they're not very polite. Plus I was badly bullied by those types from the estate and therefore I haven't got a nice opinion of them. I just think it's rude for kids of 14 or 15 to ask for sweets when they're not dressed up.

We've had three lots so far...all dressed up and polite. I buy sweets specially. I don't think any of them play the trick part round here anyway. I have more of a problem with the people who are letting off fireworks all around! The dog is going absolutely barmy. If only people would let them off on NOVEMBER 5th and at no other time, we could sedate the dog. And what about people with babies or folk on shift work? Dee x

Maybe I just live in a nice area than Chloe lol, I have no worries about any of the kids around here, they're all really well behaved.

I never went trick or treating, my parents believe that celebrating hallowe'en in any way is worshipping the devil. (I remember once though, I went to a birthday party for someone who's birthday was on the 31st, and it was a halloween/birthday party... hahahahaha, I was only 7). Anyway, when we were in our student digs in the first year, we only had one group of trick or treaters and they were little kids dressed up with their mum. It's sweet. That I don't mind. What I hate is when the kids of 10 plus come around without parents, some don't even bother to dress up, and just ask for things..... you only give them something with fear of them doing something awful, like keying your car or something. I'm only 21 and I sound like a right old biddy, but it really annoys me. It's so rude. Kids nowadays!!!! Chloe

Thought I was on my own for a minute there Paul. Thankfully, you sound like one of my neighbours - the ones that open the door!!

I don't answer the door either. The dog has a great deep bark and probably scares them off anyway. I do worry about my car which is parked a meter from the front door. Jo.

Well I'm sorry to say this, but what a load of miseries some of you lot are !! Have you forgotten what its like to be a child ? We're had several visits from trick or treaters tonight, all dressed up, ranging in age from about 7 to 12 (most escorted by parents), and they're no problem at all - all extremely polite, it's nice to see such a happy bunch of children. Next lot just about to knock the door I think ! Saying that - if the kids were rude or didnt make an effort then they wouldn't get anything from us.

I know some kids are cheeky and annoying, but it is a shame when all of them are viewed like this. My 8 year old absolutely loves Halloween. He takes ages to choose his costume and waits all day until it is dark enough to go out. He is never allowed out alone - his daddy waits a few steps behind him (and he knows he is NEVER to knock on a strangers door when he is alone). He only ever knocks once and not too loudly, and is polite and grateful for anything he receives. When it is done politely and in the correct spirit, I do not agree that it is begging - it is just tradition. People who don't want to open the door don't have to and the ones who do are generally happy to see him. Likewise, we keep a basket of sweets at the door and he is delighted to give them out when trick or treaters come to our door.

I am afraid i tape my letterbox up and put a notice on the door saying i won't open to trick or treaters. I know its a shame for the decent children that make an effort, but most of the little sods who knock for sweets and money are the ones who cause all the trouble and aggravation every other day of the year, so i will not be rewarding them tonight!! As a Mum of three i have never let my children go knocking on strangers doors at night, it terrifies the elderly, and they have never lost out, we have made the fun for them at home instead. As for fireworks.....don't even start me on that one lol.

I don't like "begging" even if it is just for sweets and I don't let my children do it. I say you could scare someone living on their own. I don't answer the door now, but a few years ago, I had some V8 (veg juice, mainly tomato) which I offered as "blood" to some boldfaced trick or treaters - that got them to go away! nell

I just had a kid come to the door in a man u t shirt and a pair of jeans. His sister was wearing a tracksuit. No face paint, no monster mask. They can't even make the effort. I dan't allow my kids to go out trick or treating but at least my daughter answered to door in her witches cape and hat with a cauldron of sweets. Debs

I don't answer the door any more. Get too many of them. Had one about 10 minutes ago already. What with that and the fireworks already starting as soon as it got dark. My 10 year old son wants to go but I won't let him. He has a Halloween party with the cubs on Wednesday so I don't mind contributing to that at least I know he's safe. Diane
