The reason firehouses have circular stairways is from the past when the engines were pulled by horses. The horses were stabled on the ground floor and figured out how to walk up straight staircases.

In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes, the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. That's where the phrase "Goodnight, sleep tight" comes from

There are a handful of words in the full edition of the Oxford English Dictionary that were made up by the lexicographers when they compiled it.

it's still law for a london cabby to carry a bail of hay in the boot. this comes from horse drawn carriage days to protect horses from long days without food!

women ogle more often than men, but because they have better peripheral vision, it isn't so obvious, therefore they don't get caught

Koala bears live on eucalyptus leaves. These are difficult to digest, but the koala has some useful bacteria in its gut which help to break down the leaves. baby koalas are born without this bacteria, so the mummy koala feeds some of her poo to them so that they eat it and then the bacteria stays in their gut and helps them to eat eucalyptus. I learned this at an exhibition on POO at the Walter Rothschild Zoological Museum in Tring at half-term. nell
