looks like we're about 50/50 on the Clarkson love/hate thing I guess I was more interested in lat weeks as my Dad worked on the railways as did his father before him. That said - surely any researcher (or Jeeves !) could have told her that the Flying Scotsman was LNER rather than LMS (or the other way around, I've forgotten) and saved her the trip to York.

O.K. for what its worth, heres my opinion. Any show that gets my other half watching something about family history can't be bad. Last week he watched as the steam trains at the beginning lulled him into a false sense of security and this week cos Clarkson was on. I enjoyed tonights show even though it hardly touched on the wood of the tree but instead focused on the fluffy bits (sociological side) When alls said and done Clarkson has a peculiar way about him, a perverse sense of humour, which you either love or hate and I happen to like it.

I thought tonights one was brill! Jeremy is great! his sense of humour really appeals to mine. Ok, so a couple of times he said about 'where had the money gone'! but come on! if anyone of us found a company like that, whether well off or not, with 'nothing' at the end of the day, the 'tips board' would be going frantic to sort it out! and that would not matter who we were. Don't mean to offend, but yes, why shouldn't he find out where all that wealth had gone? it was his families. It was last week that I totally switched off. Sorry Guy's found that one so boring, love train's but..................

Jezza makes me laugh. He is soo over the top and sarky - bit like me! Just a big show-off looking to provoke a reaction - very successfully by the looks of things... I agree that in the same situation most of us would have £££ signs flashing - one part of my family owned a lot of property at one time and I know that I was really disappointed to find it had all been bombed in WW2 and then sold to the blimmin government for a pittance. The one who really annoys me is that smug genealogist - now he really IS a prat - especially when you press the red button. Fat lot of help HE is to newbies. Maz. XX

I didn't enjoy tonight's show as much as the other ones and Jeremy was very insulting to Nottinghamshire and Staffordshire, saying they are non counties just there to fill in the gaps between the important ones. I thought he was very arrogant and only interested in finding ancestors with money and status. It is often the poorer people who have the most interesting stories. Mel

Does anyone really think that Jeremy Clarkson or any of the other celebs did any of the research themselves ? They clearly have people working behing the scenes, sending them in the right direction, supplying them with the right census sheets etc...

I thought Jeremy was only interested finding out what happened to the patent and who had bought it. You could actually see the £signs going round his head missed out on his millions,he should have started looking before he got the researcher to do his family tree. REALLY BORING TONIGHT. Sue

I tentatively agree that Jeremy is a great presenter - although I don't agree with much of what he says - specially when he's squeezed in to his jeans in a tight ferrari! However I do agree that the British Library is the ugliest building - especially next to the lovely St Pancras station. Saz

Christine there is a Caleb Kilner from Castleford that fits his tree ....... so I suspect he has one or two rellies searching his tree, after all said and done he did have a rather wide family tree drawn up for him at the beginning of the programme. I thought as he already had his tree in place he was putting flesh on the bones and i think he did it quite well. What a find though of caleb Kilner's will etc in Ivy Lodge . Much happiness Debi

Well I like Jeremy Clarkson ! He's very sarcastic and speaks his mind... bit like me (although I'm not that bad !!). I found it quite interesting tonight, but perhaps not quite as good as the previous weeks.

I only saw the last 15 minutes so can't really comment, but I actually think Jeremy Clarkson is quite sweet - **cowers in fear of missiles being thrown** !!!

Sorry to go against the tide here - but I actually enjoyed it- and laughed out loud at some of the one liners - I appreciate that he may not be everyone's cup of tea but sadly we seem to share the same sense of humour. I enjoyed the subject matter as well - I think I would have tried to find out what happened to the money too if I was in the same position! Magsx

Scott Report 2 Nov 2004 22:24

i didnt like his style of presenting, i dont find him funny at all. i feel the best show of the series so far has been sue johnston's show. she had more enthusiasm for the people she was researching where as jeremy clarkson seemed to be preocupied with how and successful they were and the actual jar. i hope ian hislop will have a good show next week as he is quite witty without acting like a prat in my opinion.

Saz Report 2 Nov 2004 22:21

I think that we all hoped this was gonna be loads of charts with names dates & places going back hundreds of years with a bit of scandal, illegitimacy & lost fortunes thrown in. In fact the common theme seems to be in the title - Who are they - why are they the way they are. The past is perhaps an influence on social or genetic future. Each person so far seems to be looking to the past to explain something about themselves. Bill Oddie and mental illness, Sue Johnstone's working class woman and tonight Jeremy and his anti-greenness (and need to splash the cash for more fast cars?) I was disappointed at first but I am actually enjoying the bits of social history - by the way some of my rellies lived in Upper Thames St and probably bought loads of Kilner jars! Saz
