what did you think of the show? i thought once a again it was a great story, they did a great job on the research to kind of bring the story to life. too bad that jeremy clarkson was in it, the guy is in my opinion a prat. lol

Jeremy certainly seemed to have a thing for his Kilner jar!..

At the end they mentioned national archives on line .....to look for wills. Can anybody tell me the site. I've put in National Archives and nothing came up. Sue xx

Sorry, I thought it was really boring and almost fell asleep! Jeremy Clarkson seemed more interested in the kilner jars than the people involved. I suppose everyone has their own reasons for doing research into their family history, but I question his real motives. Sorry to be negative, but I have not found this programme to be quite what I had hoped for. Frances

I agree with Frances, I found this episode boring, it started off ok but in my opinion went a bit downhill.

Christine

Christine Report 2 Nov 2004 22:11

I agree - I want to see them sweating over a 'hot' computer sorting out numerous records on the IGI - or in cold Churches pouring over Parish records - they all seem satisfied if they get back to c 1850s

Wonder if he is related to any of the Kilner's here, in the name search?..

Saz Report 2 Nov 2004 22:21

I think that we all hoped this was gonna be loads of charts with names dates & places going back hundreds of years with a bit of scandal, illegitimacy & lost fortunes thrown in. In fact the common theme seems to be in the title - Who are they - why are they the way they are. The past is perhaps an influence on social or genetic future. Each person so far seems to be looking to the past to explain something about themselves. Bill Oddie and mental illness, Sue Johnstone's working class woman and tonight Jeremy and his anti-greenness (and need to splash the cash for more fast cars?) I was disappointed at first but I am actually enjoying the bits of social history - by the way some of my rellies lived in Upper Thames St and probably bought loads of Kilner jars! Saz

i didnt like his style of presenting, i dont find him funny at all. i feel the best show of the series so far has been sue johnston's show. she had more enthusiasm for the people she was researching where as jeremy clarkson seemed to be preocupied with how and successful they were and the actual jar. i hope ian hislop will have a good show next week as he is quite witty without acting like a prat in my opinion.

Mags Report 2 Nov 2004 22:24

Sorry to go against the tide here - but I actually enjoyed it- and laughed out loud at some of the one liners - I appreciate that he may not be everyone's cup of tea but sadly we seem to share the same sense of humour. I enjoyed the subject matter as well - I think I would have tried to find out what happened to the money too if I was in the same position! Magsx

How about a programme for Bryan - "Genealogists called Bryan" - a 15 week series presented by Amanda Redman? Saz

I only saw the last 15 minutes so can't really comment, but I actually think Jeremy Clarkson is quite sweet - **cowers in fear of missiles being thrown** !!!

Unknown Report 2 Nov 2004 22:34

Well I like Jeremy Clarkson ! He's very sarcastic and speaks his mind... bit like me (although I'm not that bad !!). I found it quite interesting tonight, but perhaps not quite as good as the previous weeks.

Debi Coone

Debi Coone Report 2 Nov 2004 22:35

Christine there is a Caleb Kilner from Castleford that fits his tree ....... so I suspect he has one or two rellies searching his tree, after all said and done he did have a rather wide family tree drawn up for him at the beginning of the programme. I thought as he already had his tree in place he was putting flesh on the bones and i think he did it quite well. What a find though of caleb Kilner's will etc in Ivy Lodge . Much happiness Debi

Saz Report 2 Nov 2004 22:36

I tentatively agree that Jeremy is a great presenter - although I don't agree with much of what he says - specially when he's squeezed in to his jeans in a tight ferrari! However I do agree that the British Library is the ugliest building - especially next to the lovely St Pancras station. Saz

 Sue In Yorkshire.

Sue In Yorkshire. Report 2 Nov 2004 22:39

I thought Jeremy was only interested finding out what happened to the patent and who had bought it. You could actually see the £signs going round his head missed out on his millions,he should have started looking before he got the researcher to do his family tree. REALLY BORING TONIGHT. Sue
