Hi Di, I've never heard of that expression before. Here in the Netherlands they have mostly wooden clogs. Farmers are the ones who wear them a lot. I have tried a pair but couldn't walk in them, my husband can. A lot of Dutch people settled in the east of England, Lincolnshire, and you can find Dutch names on gravestones there. It is a bulb-growing district. Sylvia xxx |

Jacqueline, you could of course be right, but why say this in England and not the Netherlands? Another poser! Sylvia xxx |

Might it have something to do with the little dutch boy who put his finger in the dyke? I assume he would have been wearing clogs, and was (after all) very clever! Jacqui |

Where did this saying originate? You wouldn't think of saying "Clever wooden shoes", or would you? Sylvia xxx |
