Might it have something to do with the little dutch boy who put his finger in the dyke? I assume he would have been wearing clogs, and was (after all) very clever! Jacqui

Hi Di, I've never heard of that expression before. Here in the Netherlands they have mostly wooden clogs. Farmers are the ones who wear them a lot. I have tried a pair but couldn't walk in them, my husband can. A lot of Dutch people settled in the east of England, Lincolnshire, and you can find Dutch names on gravestones there. It is a bulb-growing district. Sylvia xxx
