Dusty springfield was the white mother of soul,,ella fitzgerald ,has to be the all time greatest jazz singer,and recently ,there have been so many,dianna ross,barbara striesland,mama cass, to name but a few,some of them so new i can't remember their names but will never forget their voices .Fred.ptfg.

Incidentally, although a lot of these singers are now no longer with us, how lucky we are that they lived in an age where their work could be recorded for future generations to share. I wonder how many fantastic voices there have been in the past? I would have loved to hear Bessie Smith on today's technology - although I have some recordings they aren't as clear as they would be now. nell

oh this is a tough one. Dusty Springfield was indeed a fabulous singer, sadly lacking in self confidence (apparrently), but capable of pouring a huge amount of emotion into her songs. I could think of lots more to fit into a top 10 but many of them are personal favourites rather than great singers per se (Stevie Nicks, also previously mentioned, is one of my favourites), but I think I'll stick with Dusty for the moment. NB Whilst I can appreciate the voices orf the Celine Dions and Barbara Streisands of this world, I personally dislike both of them :)
