Thank you, June, for this. My great-uncle Dick - Arthur George Harrison died 20 May 1918 in Ploegsteer, Belgium, at 30 years of age. (Arthur was known as Dick.) He enlisted at Camberwell, and was living at the time at Vauxhall. Private 62732 Arthur George Harrison was killed in action in World War 1. He was one of fifteen men from the Machine Gun Corp killed that day. His name is listed on 11,460 missing on The Memorial to the Missing of Ploegsteert. He was, however, formerly Private 6713 in the London Regiment. Commonwealth War Graves Commission: Remembered with honour PLOEGSTEERT MEMORIAL. In Memory of Private Arthur George Harrison, 5th Bn., Machine Gun Corps (Inf), who died aged 30 on Sunday 20th May 1918. Commemorated on Panel 11, on the Ploegsteert Memorial in Berks Cemetery Extension, 12.5 km south of Ypres town centre. The Memorial commemorates over 11,000 men who have no known grave. They fought in 1914 or 1918 on Belgian soil beside French troops, and died in France or Belgium when the frontier was of little interest in this area in which trench warfare lasted longest. The Memorial is a covered circular colonnade, 20 metres across and 11 metres high, enclosing an open space, and is entered by an opening between two stone lions. The names of the dead are carved on panels set in the walls of the colonnade. In the perpetual care of the Commonwealth War Graves.

If you wish to do something practical to keep their memories alive for future generations please visit the website: www(.)war-memorials(.)com - it is Friends of War Memorials - a serious and active charity whose members work hard at making sure war memorials throughout the UK are maintained, restored and saved from neglect and vandalism. It is an ongoing task that requires many eyes and ears on the ground in the form of Regional Volunteers. Ian

In Flanders Fields By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918) Canadian Army IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow Between the crosses row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields
