I have read them. With all due respect to those that believe in a higher power (as is your perogative), I ally myself with science - in things that have been proven, rather than in something unprovable. I ask again. How do dinosaurs fit into the picture, if the earth is only 9000 or so years old ?

Kate I also firmly believe in the Bible but it is man written and contains many contradictions - are you claiming that scientific theories which you are defending don't have any contradictions or discrepancies?

I'm a Christian too. I read the Bible - it makes sense to me! (Well a lot of it!)

Wendy, with all due respect (my phrase for the night), Kate's just asking a question - on this occasion it does weem yto be you that has the problem (sorry !!). She makes a valied point. Earlier in the thread, someone said they believed in what was written in the bible. Kate is just asking which bits, as there's contradictions - you can't believe in both.

Speaking of Atlantis, did you see the reports the other day that they had discovered what looks like man made structures deep under the sea between Cyprus and Syria I think, that they believe could be Atlantis ? Wouldn't that be interesting !

No. But Bendy did ask me to read the verses and not to make an arse out of myself. So I have read the verses again. As everyone can read them, if I have misinterpreted them and they do in fact say the same thing then I can accept I have made a mistake. Personally, I believe that no-one can ever be 100% of anything. A hundred and fifty years ago scientists believed tha atom was the smallest particle. Now we know it's not. Who knows what and where we will be in another hundred years? To me evolution makes more sense and it sits better with the genetics I have learnt, if only because of the time needed for a mutation to become so pronounced in a population as to create a distinct species. That doesn't mean to say that as our understanding of genetics increases, we won't be able to come up with another theory of how we came to be.

I believe the Old Testament to be a History of the Jewish people. As with all histories the early days are shrouded in Fable. The New Testament covers the life of someone who I believe existed, and who expounded his ideas of a decent way to live in harmony with each other. If Emperor Constantine had not adopted Christianity we very likely would not have it as a modern Religion. Buddhists follow the teachings of Buddha, Moslems Mohammed. As I see it the problem lies with those who close their minds to any criticism. Some years ago I went to see a Bible Exhibition put on by the Christdelphians who insisted that the Bible was the 100% accurate Word of God complete and unchangeable. What spoilt it was that when I queried why one of their teachings seemed to be in opposition with something the Bible said they told me that a comma should have been there! Have any of us seen the original documents from which today's Bible was translated? No, I thought not. We are just taking the word of people who had their own agenda when they "Translated" it into English. I do believe there is a power which we do not understand and which we call God. However, I do not visualise God like many people do as Santa Claus in a white frock.

Umm well the way I read them they do. One says animals then man, the other says man then animals. Maybe you could say thats just semantics and the order doesn't matter though. As said before - you're entitled to your views, and I know I won't change your mind - as you won't change mine (my opinion is that Andy was spot on regarding why people believe in the bible). We all just need to accept that we believe different things - no hostility required from either side. For anyone interested in the provable facts though I'd thoroughly recommend reading Bill Brysons A short History of Nearly Everything. Excellent reading.

I was basing things on Kate's post. However in the last few minutes I've been googling and found at least 10 sites which point out the same contradiction, plus lots more which I won't go into. Tactful tablets ? no. I'm just aware that Christmas is coming and I want to try and get SOME presents, need to be nice if Santa's looking lol

Bendy That is not unbelievable when you consider how many Suns and Planets there are in the Cosmos. There is room for everything in such a vast number of possibilities.

John - noone HAS to have faith, it's personal choice. You choose to believe in a higher power, I choose to believe in what has been scientifically proven - and yes, there are things that we don't understand yet - who knows, maybe one day we'll "prove" the existence of God.
