An Olde Crone

An Olde Crone Report 23 Nov 2004 02:12

I was brought up in a non-swearing household and really never heard anything worse than bloody till I was about 40 (I led a sheltered life!) My life then changed drastically and I had to get a job in catering. Believe me, there is only so much blushing you can do in a day, and my co-workers were at first amused and then dismayed at my reaction to their foul language. However, I became inured to it eventually and one day, in a foul temper I let drop the F word - they all cheered! Since then, swearing doesnt bother me, as someone else said on this thread, many people use it as punctuation. I once pulled someone up for using the F word all the time and I said it showed a limited vocabulary. He stared at me for a while and then treated me to about half an hour of the F word, demonstrating by its inflection what it meant in that context - a kind of shorthand really. I was weeping with laughter by the end of this. Its only a word after all, taken from the latin "fecit" its the connotation put on it that we find offensive.

Ann I thought the word never worried me - but a couple of days ago the Mirror's headline was a quote from Ozzy Osbourne and included "f***ing" - maybe I'm being hypocritical but I thought that was wrong - even asterixed - on the front of a daily paper:) David
